A Place for Story
Written By Rachel McMillan A few months ago, I was gifted the privilege of taking a trip down bookish memory lane. A few of us, including Rev Lori, went to town attempting to organize the TEMC library. On that first day, we weeded and organized and sneezed through the dust of books that had sat untouched for many years. If you have ever been inside the library, you know it is a bookish haven by virtue of its design alone.

The Rise of Closed-Door Romance
It’s almost ironic to talk about Closed-Door Romance on the heels of the second season drop of Netflix’s widely popular Bridgerton. In book and film form, Julia Quinn’s blockbuster series espouses romance for both the mental and physical senses. Heavy on the physical, if one engages between the pages of her familial threaded story and more viscerally pronounced on screen in moments of heightened passion.

Character Spotlight: Rachel McMillan’s Diana & Brent (with giveaway)
I’m delighted to feature the brilliant Rachel McMillan on the blog today as she shares about her latest characters, Diana and Brent Somerville from the newly released novel, The London Restoration. Rachel and I share a long affinity with Christian Fiction, both having read it since our childhoods.
The London Restoration
Review by Amy E, Reviewer Last updated on 27 Aug 2020 The London Restoration is a WWII historical fiction focusing on a couple who have both returned from war to their home in London. The characters are trying to come back together after the war separated and changed each other in very fundamental ways. This is a beautiful story about two people who love each other but no longer know each other as war tore their lives apart.
The London Restoration
Review by Kristina A, Reviewer Last updated on 25 Aug 2020 My Recommendation The London Restoration by Rachel McMillan is an illustrative historical novel. Diana Somerville spent the war breaking code at Bletchley Park while her husband, Brent was a stretcher bearer in France. Brent has no clue as to the type of work Diana accomplished, nor can she tell him thanks to the Official Secrets Act. Brent saw terrible tragedies while serving in Europe.
The London Restoration - Rachel McMillan;
Synopsis The secrets that might save a nation could shatter a marriage. Madly in love, Diana Foyle and Brent Somerville married in London as the bombs of World War II dropped on their beloved city. Without time for a honeymoon, the couple spent the next four years apart. Diana, an architectural historian, took a top-secret intelligence post at Bletchley Park.

Between Stairs and Stardust by Pepper Basham - Book Review, Preview
I knew I was going to die. When the instructor said “Now we’re going to jump in and swim across the deep end of the pool” terror filled my heart. Up until that moment, my swimming lessons were going great. I was tall enough that I could stand in the shallow end of the pool and still keep my head above the water so I knew I was safe. And being as I didn’t trust the water to hold me up – this was important.
Joy Davidman: The Woman Who Wanted Something More
Patti Callahan is the author of over a dozen critically acclaimed novels. Her new book, Becoming Mrs. Lewis: The Improbable Love Story of Joy Davidman and C. S. Lewis, lifts Davidman from behind the shadow of her famous husband, shining a spotlight on her spirited personality, her accomplishments as a writer, and her profound wrestling with the mysteries of God and life. Novelist Rachel McMillan spoke with Callahan about her take on this remarkable romance.
Rose in Three Quarter Time by Rachel McMillan
Some people marry for love; others marry for music… Rose McNeil is rising the ranks at the Mozarteum in Salzburg as a violinist to watch. Her musical Nova Scotian heritage has loaned an unparalleled technique to her interpretation of some of the most beautiful compositions in the world. The opportunity of a first chair assignment to the Rainer Quartet under the baton of Oliver Thorne is a dream come true— until her visa expires and the threat of leaving Vienna looms.
"You mean I'm not Perfect?" Celebrate those idiosyncrasies in your favorite sleuths...
The “Defective Detective” trope in fiction and media is often viewed negatively. Some readers believe it does a disservice to normalizing mental illness, and many feel it might add to the stigma surrounding sufferers. Below are five detectives whose mental illness acts not as a weakness but a strength of their deductive competencies.
Mystery Scene
Although there is a murder committed at the fictional Flamingo Club in Boston’s Scollay Square in 1937, this highly readable mystery is really more about two young people who have recently escaped their unsatisfying lives elsewhere and have come to this historic city to seek a better future.
Stephen King Wrestles with the Divine
Say what you will about Stephen King, but the man has staying power. Last year’s Dark Tower may have flopped, but the big screen adaptation of It raked in oodles of cash (part two is currently in pre-production). And this summer witnesses Sissy Spacek’s long-awaited return to the Maine hinterlands of King’s Castle Rock, her first time collaborating with the author since her career-defining role as Carrie in 1976.
Murder at the Flamingo by Rachel McMillan
“Maybe it was time to land straight in the middle of the adventure…” Hamish DeLuca has spent most of his life trying to hide the anxiety that appears at the most inopportune times — including during his first real court case as a new lawyer. Determined to rise above his father’s expectations, Hamish runs away to Boston where his cousin, Luca Valari, is opening a fashionable nightclub in Scollay Square.
MURDER AT THE FLAMINGO
Two misfits run away from expectations and toward mystery when they try to solve a murder in Depression-era Boston’s hottest new club. The pressure of being a young lawyer in a proud Italian family has Hamish DeLuca in a cold sweat—literally. Though panic attacks aren’t recognized as a medical problem in the 1930s, Hamish knows all too well that they’re a problem for him, and he hides his embarrassment at not feeling normal by seeking a safe harbor in his cousin Luca Valari’s Boston home.

Love in Three Quarter Time: A Viennese Valentine by Rachel McMillan
A romantic waltz through a city filled with music, passion and coffee. Evelyn Watt fell in love with Austrian marketing director Rudy Moser the moment he stepped into their Boston firm. With his ice blue eyes and chocolate-melting accent, he is as refined as she imagines his home country to be.
A Lesson in Love and Murder
From political danger to personal drama, life is about to get explosive... The legacy of literary icon Sherlock Holmes is alive and well in 1912 Canada, where best friends Merinda Herringford and Jem Watts continue to develop their skills as consulting detectives. The city of Toronto has been thrown into upheaval by the arrival of radical anarchist Emma Goldman.
Black Widow Cookies
Shhh… Don’t tell anyone that I am #TeamCap but secretly love Black Widow. I mean she can kick some major butt. With the Captain America Civil War movie hitting theaters on 5/6/16 I thought it was the perfect opportunity to make some Black Widow cookies. It’s a great way to kick off the premiere of the movie that is a must-see for ages 10 and up.
