Anti-Abortion Organizing in Colombia
Eleven months after Colombian abortion rights activists won a historic victory, right-wing religious groups are organizing to overturn abortion access. These groups are becoming increasingly involved in politics, forming unprecedented electoral alliances and calling for referendums to ban abortion nationally.
Kansas voted for abortion rights. What does that mean for the midterms?
On Aug. 2, Kansans overwhelmingly rejected a proposed amendment to their constitution that would have made it possible to ban abortion in the state. Some observers suggest that outcome may portend good results for Democrats this fall, given the very high turnout. Is that right? We draw on our research into political behavior and direct democracy to consider this possibility. Republicans are looking nervously at Democratic primary turnout - which was high but not out of line with recent trends.
The Alliances of Leftists and Evangelicals in Latin America
In 2018, political scientist Javier Corrales termed the alliances between Evangelical churches and conservative parties in Latin America “a perfect marriage." Now, divorce might be looming with a new, more intriguing suitor in the game: the Left. In the last few years, left-wing politicians in several countries have sought out alliances with Evangelical churches, leaders, and political parties.
Bhuri and the three-walled toilet
Bhuri Kallu lives on her own in the village of Bharkurra, in the district of Chitrakoot in south-eastern Uttar Pradesh. Her house, courtyard and oven are made entirely of mud. The only exception is an odd, three-walled brick structure with no roof that I later learn is an unfinished toilet. She uncovers an earthen oven – essentially a pit with multiple openings. It is the primary source of her earnings and is carefully covered by many layers of plastic, cut from used sacks.
The speaking state
If Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is serious about preventing cow vigilantism in the country, he should start by looking at the voice of his own government, Radha Sarkar writes. Many are forecasting 2017, with 20 attacks in just six months, as the worst year for cow-related violence in the history of independent India. Between 2010 and 2017, there have been 63 attacks against those perceived to be violating the cow.
