Gasly took the lead with his first flyer, setting a 1m42.181s, and then narrowly avoided an early exit from the session after a spin at Turn 12. He slid into the gravel but managed to rejoin the track without getting beached. As the field started its second stint following the usual pitstops, Mitch Evans crashed out due to a brake failure, bringing out the red flag before anyone could have improved.
Red Bull junior Gasly set his benchmark of 1m42.352s before the mid-session pitstops, as he failed to improve in the late stages, running wide at Turn 9. His teammate Giovinazzi managed to lower his own fastest time with just a couple of minutes left, but fell one tenth short Gasly. Russian Time's Raffaele Marciello took third, half a second off the pace, beating Racing Engineering driver Jordan King by just two thousandths.
Ghiotto had a better getaway than pole-sitter Mitch Evans to take the lead from the Campos driver following the opening sequence of corners. The safety car was out on Lap 2 after a collision between Racing Engineering duo Norman Nato and Jordan King. The Frenchman just passed his teammate for fourth at Turn 1 but ended up being spun out by King a corner later, which left his car stranded. While Ghiotto had a good restart, Evans lost another spot to Raffaele Marciello.
