My Sister-In-Law is Ignoring Me // Is There Any Way to Make the Relationship Work?
In this column, we give you the opportunity to listen in on a discussion between Rabbi Shais Taub and a reader with a dilemma, moderated by Rechy Frankfurter. Life After Lyme // It took years until I was diagnosed and a seeming miracle to cure it
My earliest memory is vividly imprinted in my mind. I see a younger version of myself curled up on the floor of the hallway outside my parents’ room, crying bitterly. The hour was quite late, but I was awake for the umpteenth time that night. The shooting pains in my legs didn’t allow me to get any sleep. As a child, I spent part of every night in the comfort of my mother’s bed, her soothing words taking an edge off the pain. As I take a trip down memory lane, waves of emotion flood my heart.
It’s Just a Seat. Or Is It? // My daughter was forced to constantly give in
When I sent my 13-year-old daughter off to summer camp for the first time, she went to a wonderful place. I had heard so many good things about it that I was sure she’d come home bubbling with happy memories. I figured she’d pick up some finer points of social interaction. I also hoped that she would make a good friend. Just to clarify, my Shaindy is no social misfit. She isn’t at all awkward.
Thinking of You - Mishpacha
I thought about you today, my friend. You were on my mind as I made the beds. I sent a silent prayer up for you, to have the ability to make your children’s beds for many years to come. A mutual acquaintance texted me early in the morning, surgery today, say Tehillim Leah bas Ruchel Esther. I appreciated the text; it spurred me into action. It also had me thinking about you, a lot. I thought about you as I stirred my coffee, thinking of the lattes we’d shared over the years.
I Want One, Too
I don’t think I’m jealous by nature. Generally, I’m happy for people when things go well for them. It’s great that my friend found a big apartment to house her growing family. It’s amazing that she got it for a great price and now owns a two-floor home. My own small rental is good enough for my family now. I don’t relegate her gain to the list of “my losses.” I’m thrilled that some of my siblings were able to go away for a few days.
Summer Twos - Mishpacha
Spending the summer in a bungalow colony year after year has led me to coin a new term: Summer Twos. Combining the concept of summer blues and the terrible twos, those of us privileged enough to live in ramshackle huts situated in an oasis of greenish mud with (at least) one child under the age of three have a special understanding of the term. Summer Twos is that feeling of dread that envelops a woman’s heart when she hasn’t seen her two-year-old for four minutes.
Signature Sheya - Mishpacha
A: Speak to Sheya After more than three decades on the front lines, veteran Jewish music producer Sheya Mendlowitz is still at it — sniffing out new stars, genres, and styles for a most discerning crowd, and making sure there’s enough pizza to keep everyone happy when the work seems overwhelming. From Creating a young chassid named Avremel to finding a class act for HASC, he never ceased bringing freshness to an ever-changing, discriminating industry.
