The Patient Will See You Now
“He was OK.” This anonymous comment stung more than the blatantly negative reviews that patients occasionally post about me online. Sure, I get good reviews about the impact of my care on patients’ lives (“The doctor was very good and I felt heard…I actually walked out feeling understood and I felt a weight had been lifted.” “I love Dr. Telhan.” Or simply: “Muy bueno.”). And I readily accept feedback that points me toward things I need to improve (“I felt very rushed through the visit.”).
Hunger Games
Near the end of the hellish first year of the coronavirus pandemic, I was possessed by the desire to eliminate sugar—all refined sugar—from my diet. In retrospect, it probably wasn’t the best time to add a new challenge to the mix of mayhem that already seemed to rule my life. My wife and I had been struggling since spring with three young kids remote-schooling and no childcare.
Mutations
Has there ever been a disease so intensely studied and so intensely controversial as Coronavirus Disease 2019? We have come to know more more quickly about COVID-19 than we have about any pandemic-causing pathogen in history. The genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus was uploaded to an open-access database by scientists from the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center on January 11, 2020.

The American is “an idealist working on matter,” the philosopher George Santayana once noted. I shared his words recently with an audience of doctors, bioethicists, and psychologists during a grand-rounds lecture in New York about the relationship between literature and medicine. Winter 2018 Volume 94, Number 4 In our winter issue, we grapple with questions of community: why kinship doesn’t necessarily translate to citizenship, what it means to be healthy or at risk among neighbors, and how we take care of each other in a world of inequality. “[T]here exists an allegiance between the dead and the unborn of which we the living are merely the ligature.” —Robert Pogue Harrison, The Dominion of the Dead Monsters. The label was affixed to a display case that housed a collection of glass jars. Sealed with a rusted screw-top lid or damp wooden cork, they contained malformed fetuses preserved in fluid. The term, seemingly a cruel joke, was part of an outmoded medical lexicon and described a fetus with gross congenital anomalies.
