Design Patterns for Microservices
Microservices Design Patterns: Aggregator API Gateway Chained or Chain of Responsibility Asynchronous Messaging Database or Shared Data Event Sourcing Branch Command Query Responsibility Segregator Circuit Breaker Decomposition Microservice architecture has become the de facto choice for modern application development. Though it solves certain problems, it is not a silver bullet. It has several drawbacks and when using this architecture, there are numerous issues that must be addressed.
Design Patterns for Microservices Architectures
Applications have been built with monolithic architectures for decades; however, many are now moving to a microservices architecture. Microservices architectures gives us faster development speed, scalability, reliability, the flexibility to develop each component with the best tech stack suitable, and much more. Microservices architectures rely on independently deployable microservices. Each microservice has its own business logic and database consisting of a specific domain context.
Microservices and Containerization
DZone > Trend Reports > Microservices and Containerization The Intersection of Cloud Architectures and Design Principles According to our 2022 Microservices survey, 93% of our developer respondents work for an organization that runs microservices. This number is up from 74% when we asked this question in our 2021 Containers survey.
A Tech Community That's Stronger Together: Looking Back at 2020 with IOD
When I reflect on the recipe responsible for our growth, I realize that the main ingredient has been people. Not just the addition of more people, but of talented people, kind people, professional people. People I can count own to run parts of the business I ran entirely myself four years ago. Perhaps even more consequential is how the people involved in growing IOD work together, with respect, in harmony, as well as with trust of and for each other.
Which Cloud Provider Is Right for You? (An IOD Series, Part 2)
(Don’t miss Part I in this series on choosing the right cloud provider when it comes to databases.) Prior to container technology, making applications run on different environments was one of the greatest struggles for a developer. “It runs on my machine” was a common frustration you heard from engineers—including me, many times.
The Future of Spring Cloud's Hystrix Project
Key Takeaways Spring Cloud Hystrix project is deprecated. So new applications should not use this project. Resilience4j is a new option for Spring developers to implement the circuit breaker pattern. Resilience4j comes with other features like Rate Limiter, Retry and Bulkhead along with Circuit Breaker pattern. Resilience4j works well with spring boot and using micrometer libraries, it can emit metrics for monitoring.

PCF 2.6 Feature - App Revisions
Overview Developers, who have been using Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) have been asking the question of how they know which version of Application PCF is running. We used to check this in on-premise by going to that VM and checking the jar version. Also, performing a rollback smoothly for PCF deployments at the SCM (Github) or CI/CD level is painful and risk-prone. It involves verification, approval and other deployment processes. With PCF 2.6, Pivotal has come up with a feature called App Revisions.
AWS Lambda Best Practices
Overview Serverless has become the most used deployment pattern for cloud applications. In this field, AWS Lambda is a very well known player. Every developer wants to get his hands dirty with lambda, build a quick function code, and run it. However, there are myths that AWS manages the compute so Lambda is hands-off. It handles scalability, ha, security, performance and so on by its own.
Running Spring Batch Applications in PCF
1. Overview Most developers are creating microservices these days and deploying to cloud platforms. Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) is one of the most well known cloud platforms. When we talk about deploying applications on PCF, mostly they would be long-running processes which never end, like web applications, SPAs, or REST-based services. PCF monitors all these long-running instances and if one goes down it spins up the new instance to replace the failed one.

Read the Global Microservices Trends report to learn more. 1. Overview In today's world, everyone is creating microservices and calling the DB or other services to process the data and complete their business processing.
Concatenate Strings in Groovy
"I love writing authentication and authorization code." ~ No Developer Ever. Try Okta Instead. 1. Introduction Groovy has two ways of instantiating strings. One is plain java.lang.Stringand the second is groovy.lang.GString. Plain string is represented with a single or double quote. However, the single quote doesn't support interpolation. Interpolation is supported only with a double quote, and when it is present, it becomes GString.
How to Specify Named Parameters Using the NamedParameterJdbcTemplate
Download the Altoros NoSQL Performance Benchmark 2018. Compare top NoSQL solutions – Couchbase Server v5.5, MongoDB v3.6, and DataStax Enterprise v6 (Cassandra). Overview Spring JdbcTemplate is a powerful mechanism to connect to the database and execute SQL queries. It internally uses JDBC API but eliminates a lot of problems of JDBC API. It helps to avoid writing boilerplate code for such as creating the connection, statement, closing resultset, connection, etc..
Integration Testing in Spring Boot
WSO2 is the only open source vendor to be named a leader in The Forrester Wave™: API Management Solutions, Q4 2018 Report. Download the report now or try out our product for free. Overview When we talk about integration testing for a spring boot application, it is all about running an application in ApplicationContext and run tests. Spring Framework does have a dedicated test module for integration testing. It is known as spring-test.

Spring Retry — How to Handle Failures - DZone Microservices
In the microservice world, we have services talking to each other. One method of communication is synchronous. However, in the cloud computing world, the fact is that we cannot avoid network glitches, temporary service downtime (due to a restart or crash; not more than a few seconds). When clients need real-time data and your downstream service is not responding momentarily, it may impact the users, so you should create a retry mechanism. There are many solution options available in Java.
Design Patterns for Microservice-To-Microservice Communication
In my last blog, I talked about Design Patterns for Microservices. Now, I want to deep more deeply into the most important pattern in microservice architecture: inter-communication between microservices. I still remember when we used to develop monolithic applications; communication used be a tough task. In that world, we had to carefully design relationships between database tables and map with object models.
Deployment Challenges and Solutions For PCF Platform
Many users have started PCF as a platform to host their applications and microservices. The more you use the platform and uncover the issues and challenges. So today, I am going to talk about microservices deployment issues on the PCF platform. I have been working with many teams who started breaking their monolith applications and converting them into microservices. I have a team that handles approximately 20+ microservices now.
Microservices Design Patterns: Essential Guide
Microservices architecture has become the de facto choice for modern application development. Though it solves a multitude of problems, it is not a silver bullet. Like all software, it has its own unique set of challenges that must be addressed. This brings about the need to learn common design patterns in microservices and solve said challenges with reusable solutions.
Blue-Green Deployment For Cloud Native Applications
Blue-green deployment is a technique that enables continuous delivery to production with reduced downtime and risk. It achieves this by running two identical production environments called Blue and Green. Let's assume, Green is the existing live instance and Blue is the new version of the application. At any time, only one of the environments is live, with the live environment serving all production traffic. Blue-Green deployment is simple when you have one instance of an application running.
Angular on PCF and Other Production Servers
Angular has become the primary choice for developers to build a web and SPA application. However, most of the tutorials available talk about running the Angular app using "ng serve." "ng serve" is a command provided by the AngularJS CLI. It will serve a project that is 'Angular CLI aware,' i.e. a project that has been created using the Angular CLI, particularly using: This is useful when you are developing the app on your system and want to see the changes reflected in browser while coding.
Spring Cloud Config Server Without RabbitMQ/Kafka
Before we dive into the practical challenges while implementing Spring Cloud Config Server (SCCS), let's understand the high level of SCCS, what it is and what is required to set it up. SCCS provides an HTTP resource-based API for external configuration (name-value pairs or equivalent YAML content). The server is embeddable in a Spring Boot application, by using the annotation.
DevOps Pipeline Managing PCF App and Resources
There are many tools available to do DevOps for PCF. Automating the deployment of artifacts to PCF is very easy and many articles have been published about it. Now, you will be asking, what different aspects this article is going to cover? In my current project, I have observed that developers keep deploying applications on PCF with little control so the resources are piling up and leading to a huge bill to the DevOps team who manages the platform.
Backward Compatibility Check for REST APIs
Microservices have now become the core part of any IT architecture, and that makes REST APIs an even more popular choice for developing any service. However, with the increase of API development, some challenges are also popping up which need attention. One of the biggest challenges is, while making enhancements to these APIs, developers may break the existing API features.
Scheduling Jobs Using PCF Scheduler
Anyone who has tried to run a batch application either through Spring Cloud Task or Spring Batch Job on PCF knows the pain of running the application on it and doing scheduling. To date, PCF has been considered only as a means to run "web" process types of applications, where there is no room for "Batch" Process types, as there was no built-in scheduler available. But, with PCF 2.0, a very nice service called "PCF Scheduler" was introduced.
