Gender-based occupational segregation in India rose between 1993–94 and 2023–24. Rural India has become more segregated over time. The extent of segregation among regular-salaried workers has declined and that among casual labourers has grown sharply. Unlike earlier decades, the self-employed segment saw a steep rise in segregation post-COVID-19. Higher education among women is strongly associated with a lower likelihood of agricultural employment, although its magnitude has moderated over time.
