Why did you become a journalist?

I decided to become a journalist in high school. I found I had a knack for writing and I also enjoyed it. I joined my high school’s yearbook staff and became a staff writer for its monthly magazine. I loved the mix of the work: There’s the thrill of meeting deadlines, being “in the know” about relevant issues in the community and the independence to pursue stories you feel are important to your readership. I also loved the creativity of feature writing and being able to craft a story in a way that I found to be most impactful. I went on to study journalism in college and I interned at an array of media outlets in my city. I worked as a professional newspaper reporter for about five years. The job is demanding, stressful and often pays low, but the work feels important. As a reporter, I enjoyed being the one to hold officials and institutions accountable. I loved attending public meetings and having the ability to walk up to the higher ups in the community and ask direct, important questions. I served the readers and I tried to inform the community the best I could about issues which affected them. Whether you work at a small, rural daily or the New York Times, the job carries a tremendous amount of responsiblity and I never took that lightly. You go home at the end of the day knowing the work you do matters, it helps people and it does the public a service.
