Reporting facts and sharing honest feelings - It's about connection

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I felt I had a unique voice that people connected with

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not write in high school but I did write an article for college newspaper on why it was not fair for the drinking age to be changed

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The Out of The Darkness Walk and also a piece I wrote on transgender teens

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Have a thick skin - if you like a piece, keep shopping it around even if it gets rejected a few times.

When's the best time to pitch you?

During the week before school lets out at 3 pm

What's your favorite drink?

Coffee - Black and lots of it

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

at the TV

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Sunday Styles section of the New York Times - I look forward to it every week.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I only want to write about family topics. I am interested in a lot of other writing opportunities
