76-68: Bulldogs' 3-peat one for the ages

The Wilson Times — The odds must be astronomical, right? We've all said it or heard it when something abnormal happens during a sporting event. An event, a shot or a feat no one has ever seen before. But really, what are the odds? I started thinking ... This column focused on Barton College's men's basketball team winning three straight games by the score of 76-68. Talked with authors, professors, players, coaches, and other experts to find out "what are the odds?" Ended up going viral and helped me win my first North Carolina Press Association top columnist award.

All-Area Basketball (Design clip)

All-Area Basketball (Design clip)

New Bern Sun Journal — Was tasked with coming up with an original idea for a display of the paper's all-area basketball team. Was given complete freedom to do what I wanted, and instead of going with the standard group shot of the players all together, a very boring and tired approach, I decided to spice it up by making "signature" basketball cards. I got action photos of each player, cut them out and placed them on a template I designed using frame clip art. The idea was to make them look old-fashioned, but with players bursting out of them. The signatures were obtained in person on pieces of paper, which were scanned and placed on 3-D looking pieces to "pop" off the page.

Triangle's Triple Threat (Design clip)

New Bern Sun Journal — An on-deadline piece here. When the Big 3 college basketball programs at UNC, Duke, and N.C. State all made the Sweet 16, I decided to design a front with the story on it. This was using Quark XPress and was a very clunky process. But in the end, the design was superb, got lots of attention, and was part of the paper's "top design" win within the Freedom Communications company.

Wilson Times front (Design clip)

Wilson Times front (Design clip)

The Wilson Times — On-deadline front page with lots of interesting pull-in areas. The special black Q & A story was my idea, helping it to get it's own advertising underneath soon after it was introduced. Headline in the middle played off the pictures from the game. One happy, one not so happy moment. As was the game story itself.

DoIt4Em (Design clip)

DoIt4Em (Design clip)

The Wilson Times — I was tasked with a catchy, but not too over the top design for a story on a middle school basketball player's tribute to a friend who passed away. The story ended up going viral as we were doing it, with Facebook and Twitter coming alive, along with a YouTube video. My idea was to try and incorporate some of that Social Media explosion into the newspaper's design.
