In the Mustang’s Wake

Historian Ray Wagner called its last iteration, the 490-mph P-51H, “probably the fastest prop-driven plane actually used in wartime.” The cautious “probably” and “actually used” are significant; like the Focke Wulf Ta-152, a high-altitude variant of the Fw-190, the H model Mustang arrived very late in World War II and played scarcely any part in the fighting.
BOMBSHELL Review: The Hedy Lamarr Story Is A Blast
One generation may know Hedy Lamarr best as the inspiration for a running gag in Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles; others remember her fondly as the glamorous star of classic Hollywood features such as Algiers and Samson and Delilah. Much of the modern public likely doesn’t know that she developed technology that led to the creation of Wifi and Bluetooth, part of a life that would make a compelling movie of its own—and now has, in Alexandra Dean’s documentary Bombshell.
A Note on Vampire Electronics
Only Lovers Left Alive (Devin’s review) was one of the regrettably many smaller films I missed seeing in a theater in 2014, but thankfully it’s one that Ma Redbox has allowed me to catch up with this year. And when I finally got the chance to sit down with it, boy was I charmed! This lovely, quiet little film from director Jim Jarmusch brings a wonderfully fresh spin to the otherwise played-out vampire genre. Spoilers follow, so beware if you haven’t seen the film (and go see it!).
