Razel Suansing’s Biography

Razel Suansing is a multimedia journalist experience independently producing A-section stories, long-form features, photographs, and video segments in various contexts (United States, Mindanao, Manila). Her work has been featured on Rappler, Mindanews, Yale Daily News, and the Yale Globalist.
Her journalistic work is dedicated to reimagining the role of journalists in post-conflict areas, focusing on human-interest stories that deconstruct perpetuated notions about such areas. Her pieces are often situated in her home island, Mindanao, where media narratives have historically served to antagonize the Muslim populations as terrorist affiliates with little nuance. Her coverage has focused on youth organizations that work to prevent youth extremism and push for sustainable peace in the region.
Her other reportage revolves around the push for criminal justice reform in the state of Connecticut and Filipino American communities in the United States. As an associate Cops and Courts reporter, Razel covers topics ranging from prosecutor accountability to prisoner gerrymandering. Razel also reports on the New Haven and Yale Police Departments, specializing in breaking news stories. As an intern for Rappler, Razel covers the rise of Filipino American hate crimes.
