Guerra: Return to Civility – Rio Grande Guardian
My parents taught me to treat other people with dignity and respect no matter what. I took their lesson to heart. As written in Matthew 7:12, “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” I want to live in a society that is built on the Golden Rule – treat others as you would like to be treated. Considering the current state of affairs, I am not alone in saying we have lost our way. And I am worried.
Perryman: Household Debt – Rio Grande Guardian
Household debt in the United States is at an all-time high – more than $17 trillion. Of that amount, the lion’s share, almost $12.4 trillion, is for housing, and credit card obligations recently topped $1 trillion. These are big numbers, and they are rising. The question is whether they are a cause for concern. The short answer is “not really” given current conditions, though there are some underlying issues which bear watching.
Wood: Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week: Stopping Lawsuit Abuse Starts With You – Rio Grande Guardian
Frivolous lawsuits have real costs and consequences. Undeserving and abusive lawsuits can come for anyone, and the consequences directly hurt employees, consumers and local economies. They drive up costs for businesses and consumers. They undermine job creation, and burden our civil court system. We all pay, and we all lose when it comes to lawsuit abuse.
Guerra: 88th Legislature passed legislation to strengthen pocketbooks and health of all Texans – Rio Grande Guardian
Dear Constituent, The 88th legislative session concluded on May 29, followed by two special sessions. Through it all, we passed important legislation to strengthen the pocketbooks and the health of all Texans, including: Property Tax Reform Increased Health Care for Mothers and their Newborn Babies New Job, Educational and Economic Initiatives These new laws will help our families earn more money and keep more money in their pockets.
Guerra: Bilingual Education: The Future of Texas
Texas needs to focus on our emerging bilingual education students so that all Texas students obtain the education and economic opportunities they deserve. Currently, Texas serves more than 5.4 million students. Twenty-one percent of those students are identified as Emergent Bilingual (EB) students. Emergent bilingual students are students who are learning English. One out of five students in Texas is an Emergent Bilingual Student.
Guerra: Junk Fees are bad for families, bad for Texans
According to the National Consumer Law Center, “junk fees” are hidden charges attached to goods and services such as concert tickets, airline tickets, or bank loans. These unexpected fees obscure the true price, make a profit off of “gotchas,” and prevent comparison shopping. Junk fees are hidden at best, and false advertising at worst. If you are a consumer, you have been a “captive” customer. You know the feeling. You want to purchase four tickets for your family to attend a concert.
Guerra: It’s time to turn up the heat and support geothermal energy production in Texas
Hidalgo County could be a major energy provider to the Texas power grid and to other major industries 24/7 if we invest in geothermal energy production and storage. That’s why I’m re-filing a bill this session that I first introduced last session to turn up the heat – the geothermal heat – to encourage geothermal energy production in Texas.

Guerra: TTIC, Border Security and Cooperation
The Rio Grande Valley has always prioritized keeping our community safe. Border security remains a part of that effort. But lately, the term “border security” has been used as a political football to polarize folks. That’s a real shame. Those of us blessed to live in the Rio Grande Valley know our communities are safe.
Guerra: Expanding Medicaid is wise fiscal policy
Dade Phelan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, issued interim charges related to healthcare reform in Texas. The House Select Committee on Healthcare Reform will meet in Austin on August 4th and 5th, 2022 to address this charge. As the only member from the Rio Grande Valley, and vice chair of the Public Health Committee, I am honored to represent the RGV and advocate for improved healthcare access and health outcomes in our community.
Tejanos and Texas on 10th Anniversary of Tejano Monument's instillation at state Capitol
It is hard to believe that ten years have passed since The Tejano Monument was unveiled on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol on March 29th, 2012. The Tejano Monument is the only tribute to Hispanic culture on the Texas Capitol grounds and serves as a legacy of the state’s Spanish and Mexican pioneers and settlers. The 20-foot-long granite and bronze statue depicts the Tejanos, a people who have been intertwined in the fabric of Texas from our state’s beginning.
Guerra: Time for Texas to use more geothermal energy
Geothermal energy; many of us have never heard of it, and if we have, it sounds like science fiction. The first human use of geothermal resources started over 10,000 years ago, when settlers established themselves around hot springs for warmth and cleansing. Geothermal energy is heat from the earth that can be harnessed to generate power. Today, we have the technology to transform this natural occurring phenomenon into energy used to power homes, industries, military bases, and much, much more.
Guerra: Medicaid Expansion: Good For Business, Good For Families
Medicaid expansion is good for Texas businesses and Texas families. I have long been a supporter of expanding Medicaid because I agree with Joe Straus, our former Republican Speaker of the House, that government should be run like a successful business. Expanding Medicaid is a wise fiscal policy, and it’s long past time for Texas to embrace it. Many states have recently adopted Medicaid expansion; but Texas has been reluctant to follow that lead.
Guerra: Number of COVID-19 fatalities in RGV is shocking
I am Bobby Guerra, state representative for District 41. We stand here together as the Rio Grande Valley legislative delegation for the Texas House of Representatives, so I can introduce you to the House Democratic Caucus Affordable Health Plan for every Texan. As a senior member of the Texas House Committee on Public Health, I know first hand that the single most critical issue facing Texans is insufficient access to affordable, quality, healthcare.
