JBL Synthesis vs Perlisten R series, take a wild guess, would just like your thoughts
I’m still on the speaker hunt, I am set to purchase some JBL Synthesis from a forum member, I’m just working out the funds. What’s the same, don’t mix family and business? Is it also don’t mix friendship and business? I did mention this earlier, but I ended up purchasing a full set of surrounds and Atmos, 10 speakers in total from a friend, all Kef Ci200RR as he is dealer.

Do you really think it matters - Center channel above or below the screen?
Hello, I was curious how many of you think it makes a noticeable difference to have the center channel below or above the screen. I understand everyone is different - some people think that $5K cables vs. Blue Jeans $50 cables will make a big difference. Just curious if it matters to you? I'm debating between building a lower cabinet for my AV stuff so my center sits on top of it or building a shelf so I can mount it over the TV.
Front Left and Right Speakers ceiling mount
I am in the process of finishing my basement and my contracted suggested me to buy appropriate L/R speakers and to be mounted on ceiling while i am totally against this as i strongly believe L/R front speakers are supposed to be kept in our ear position and ceiling mount is only for Convenience compromising Acoustics. Any thoughts on this? How about concealing in front wall left and right side of the screen which is better than ceiling mount?
NEAR LB Series, JBL Control, Others?
Hi, New to the forum, but have been viewing for a while - thanks for all of the great advice and info! I'm looking to upgrade outdoor speakers for decent sized patio area (roughly 30'x40') and looking at some different options. The speakers will be mounted against house up under eaves. Two options that I have shortlisted are JBL Control 29AV and NEAR LB8s. The JBL seems to be relatively easy to find, NEAR definitely less common.
3 speaker recommendation
Revel, JBL Synthesis (SCL-10 coming in August), and Perlisten. Feel free to email me for details. Post your price range to get more advice. For the vintage look with good sound quality, look at JBL L100 Classic or the similar but smaller models.
KEF 104/2 2nd Generation Crossovers
Hello! Looking for anyone who has information on the second Generation KEF 104/2 crossover schematics. This model came with two crossovers SP2042 and SP2043. Restoring a set and ran into some heavily corroded resistors in which the specs are unknown as the markings are not clear. Anyone have any ideas where these schematics might live? Thank you, Wendy
Outdoor Speakers Under $500
Hi everyone, Seeking recommendations for decent outdoor speakers for a covered patio area under a $500 total budget. Currently considering the Sonance speakers on sale for $120, or Kef. What are your suggestions?
Advice needed for subwoofer purchase
This is my first post here and also my first time purchasing home theater gear. Plan: Currently living in a 2-bedroom apartment with an open plan living room. The living room is open to the kitchen and dining area. See attached floor plan. Purchase a house soon (next couple of years) and set up a home theater in the basement. So, for now, purchase gear that fulfills my needs now, but remains usable once we upgrade. Getting high tactile bass is important.
2.1 vs 3.1
I just bought a condo (vacation home) and I can't really get rears in as the couch is against the wall. I was going to get the Sonos Ultra sound bar but my installer thinks that quality speaker 2.1 will be better than the soundbar. He is avoiding a receiver which won't fit in the console my wife chose, and using KEF R5 Meta floor standing speakers running on a Sonance Amp 2-100 (small format) and a Martin Logan powered subwoofer. I prioritize clear dialogue, and often like a center.
JBL Control 30 or 31
I need to replace a pair of Control 30’s that are 7 years old and exposed to salt air 24/7: they have served me well Parasound Halo amp question is: there is a variant of this that is slightly less expensive: Control 31 would that be an OK replacement?
I'm lost! Need covered patio speaker advice please
I'm looking to add some speakers and TV to a covered patio that is nearly finished being framed. I marked on the pictures with a red x where I'm thinking speakers might go and also where the TV will go. Is this a good setup? There will be a seating area in front of the TV and a dining area in the other half of the covered patio. Since I don't know anything about what to buy, or how the speakers will be set up... will they all be in mono since the patio is 30 ft wide?
Buying Advice: Please help Compare Ascend Acoustics ELX Towers vs Focal Sopra N1 vs Perlisten S4B
I’m looking for guidance on my next speaker upgrade and would really appreciate your advice—especially if you’ve had firsthand listening experience with the following: Ascend Acoustics ELX Towers + Horizon Center, Focal Sopra N1, or the Perlisten S4B. My current setup: Front LCR: Ascend Acoustic Sierra 2 (original 2015 version) Subwoofers: Dual Rythmik FV18s Room: My room is 30ft wide x 15ft long x 10ft tall, with the speakers about 12ft from my main listening seat.
Pendant speakers for atmos
Then I am way behind. Now I have a 7.1 setup. Was going to remove the rear surround and add a pair of ceiling speakers... (what my system will do... Denon AVR-S960H) Just playing with the idea. Not sure I would go mounting multiple Ceiling speakers... Pretty sure My GF would not appreciate me littering the ceiling with Multiple speakers hanging or on poles... in our main living room of our studio- ish condo.
Feel free to email me and I'll see if I can get a pair for you at a good price.
Is there any benefit to back boxes for in wall speakers for 2x6 walls with insulation?
Contact your speaker manufacturer and ask them the ideal volume for your speaker. You can make your own back box or stud off the bay and line the cavity with mass loaded vinyl. Make the cavity a little bigger and fill the interior with insulation or polyfill to get the best response.
Help with Behringer B115D and B112D - Live Event
#1 · "My meters on my MIXER was not peaking. BUT, my speakers were clipping occasionally...and I felt like they weren't even as loud as I've pushed them before without clipping." That's the short of it. I have several questions besides that but that's the main thing that happened. Here's more details... DETAILS ABOUT THE EVENT: A little league event needed better sound for their opening day ceremonies in front of about 1500 people and I offered to help.
In-Walls to Replace Canton CT-1000's
#1 · Very sad day..... My main listening room is being destroyed by a designer and my wife. I need valid L/R replacements for a pair of Canton CT-1000. Which are sealed 3-way 12" Woofers, Mid and Tweeters I can go up to 9 feet high as the ceiling is 11.5 but I'm limited to fitting between 16" studs and I need them in a box/sealed. Is there a solution? This is my main room where we entertain and the music is played loud from my OPPO player or WAV/FLAC files on my NAS.
Speaker upgrade: KEF R11 Meta, Perlisten R7t, or Revel PerformaBe F228Be
#1 · Hello all, Looking to update my home theater speaker setup. Currently using Dynaudio Evoke speakers. Here are the models I am considering: Kef R11 Meta, with matching KEF center and surrounds Perlisten R7t with matching center and surrounds Revel PerformaBe F228Be with center and surrounds I use my setup mostly for home theater but am also a high end music stereo listener. The Dynaudios are very good, just looking for the next level if this would be it.
Speaker Setup for a Wedding Reception in a Barn
#1 · Hello all, My brother is looking for a speaker setup for a 2,000sqft barn. I want to try to eliminate loud spots so I was thinking 6-8 speakers along the long walls. I do not know what type of speaker I should be using for this or a receiver. It would be best if we had a receiver/amp that way where the speakers are we do not have to run an power outlet to them, only speaker wire. You can see from the attached picture what the initial plan is for a layout (speakers in blue).
Jbl L100 classic basses to weak
Thank you very much, now I understand the graph Why do you suggest a Martin Logan Dynamo 800x instead of two Mrw 10 audio monitors? Is it one subwoofer better than two? I've seen that when I have 70 volume the music starts to distort Why do you suggest buying a subwoofer and not a power amplifier? Thanks a lot
4K Ultra UHD or Blu-ray disc?
#1 · Good Day I own a 4K OLED TV 55 inches connected via HDMI 2.1 cable which will be connected to my incoming Cambridge Audio CXUHD universal player. My major question: Which will be better to watch a film is it by 4K Ultra UHD disc or by Blu-ray disc connected to a universal player with upscaling capability to 2160p resolution. I watched some comparisons on YouTube, and I felt watching a film on Blu-ray looks better than watching a film on a 4K Ultra UHD disc.
New Home, New Installation Challenges
#1 · Recently moved into a new home. I'm hoping to set up my A/V system in a smallish room, with challenges. Looking for some advice. I've purchased a new Sony STRAZ5000ES receiver. I moved with existing speakers, Revel F206's along with matching center channel. New Sony 85" L-series television. The questions are: Do I want Atmos? And where do I put surrounds/overheads? The challenge is that the room has 10 foot high walls and a peaked ceiling.
Using Revel W893 speakers as Atmos - question about baffles and boxes.
#1 · Hello all, I am planning to use 4 x Revel W893 as atmospheric speakers. Admittedly I have never really understood the need/use for boxes or baffles. With that said, is the recommendation to use something for the W893s or do I just install them in the ceiling? If something is recommended, please help me with the recommendation. I have searched for something designed/built for the W893 and come up empty. Right now, my plan is just to install them into the ceiling and call it a day. Thanks.
Quick question, what type of connector is this?
Push down and insert the bare speaker wire into the hole on the side, then release to lock the wire in place.
Choosing Speakers for Dedicated Home Theater
#1 · Guys please help me with speakers for Dedicated Home Theater. It is a real tough on what to pick for that. I am working a project for my Uncle and he is getting a new home built. And while planning for it I am unable to decide on what speakers to pick for Home Theater. He is going for $50k KEF Reference(Fronts) + R Meta(Surrounds) 9.8.6 setup for the Living Room. So yeah that makes it real difficult to pick up anything for Home-theater that would actually take it up a notch or two from there.
New build, very large open area, home theater speaker placement questions
#1 · Just signed a contract to build my very first home.
JBL studio 6 inwalls as LCR with custom boxes
The more cabinet volume you have, the less it restricts the output level and LF extension. I would not build a minimum volume cabinet. Look at the size of the equivalent cabinet models and copy that. Studio 6 Theater is more expensive than 88LCR in the US, it makes no sense that it is the same price in India. Theater is bigger, has more drivers, and will play a bit louder. Specs say 88LCR has a bit better LF extension. Your rep or dealer should be answering your questions.
Large But Short, Efficient Reference Speakers
Hi All, I'm interested in potentially new LCR speakers for my theater setup in the family room. Room is close to 20x20 with 8.5 ft ceilings. The room has a built in for the TV and speakers, leaving me specific spaces for L, C, R speakers. The left and right spaces are 19" wide by 28" tall and 25" deep. There is acoustic fabric on the doors so the speakers don't need to be pretty.
Ideal center channel speaker height contradicts ideal TV height.
#2 · You have to compromise a bit. The bottom of my 75" TV is 34.5" from the floor, the stand my Revel C208 sits on is 21" high. I don't even need to angle the C208 up. #3 · What is "ideal" is one thing, what is "actually doable in the real world" something else. With a little luck and patience, you can figure out, through direct trial and error, "What is ideal FOR ME, IN THE REAL WORLD." The third is the only one worth a flying you-know-what.
Best Looking Speakers?
#1 · I did a quick search and didn't see anything come up, but I was curious (and thought it would be a little fun) on what everyone's opinions were on the best looking speakers? Regardless of price, availability, bookshelf/floorstanding, etc.
Best in-wall speaker
#1 · Been out of the game for a while-went cheap (monoprice) on my initial setup but now I can spend some money. L,R,C and 2 surrounds for less than about $2k. I don't trust the reviews online. Mostly for watching movies and sports and a little Call of Duty. I have a Denon AVR-S570BT (do I need to upgrade this?) Klipsch? B&W? I really wanted Triad but couldn't afford (are they a player anymore?) Thank you! Gary Sort by #2 · Yes, Triad still makes awesome speakers.
Home Theater Audio Sounding Loose / Muddy
#2 · #3 · I recently built a big ported 15" subwoofer, thread here. I have run many sweeps on it, and it seems to be performing okay, but the bass feels incredibly loose on it. For anything that feels like it should have a distinct moment of impact, like the slam of a big bass drum, I will hear a bass rumble during that time, but I will not hear any obvious moment of "impact." You can't even really tell when the drum was struck, you just know it was vaguely within this period of bass rumble.
What is the absolute best sounding speakers you have ever heard?
#1 · Topic. Also list why it stood out to you. For me. The B&W 800D2 driven by mcintosh mono blocks, it out offered outstanding clarity/bass and dynamics. Sort by #2 · I very much enjoyed listening to k horns #3 · I heard some B&W’s in Magnolia (don’t recall the model but they were about 60k) and they sounded amazing. They had the most pleasing bass I’ve experienced. It was tight and tuneful and powerful but it wasn’t “room shaking”… hard to describe #5 · were they shaped like snails?
My opinion on measurement based "objective" reviews!
#2 · You are absolutely wrong withall due respect. The good measured products sound bad to me, I use this as a tool of which products to avoid, and for that, measurements become an extremely important tool, albeit a bit unintentional.
Best in ear headphones
Heads up from my boss at The Screening Room (Home Theater | Colorado | The Screening Room AV). John owns TSR, is a film maker and film scoring composer. He knows what good audio sounds like. In case anyone wants a pair of one of the best in ear headphones ever made, the AKG N5005 is normally $1000, it's on sale right now for $159 ! I have a set of these and they are pretty amazing.
The new Wilson Mezzo CSC -- Finally found a big enough center speaker!
#1 · I'll take one for each system. 😁 The Wilson Audio Mezzo CSC is a culmination of endeavors to stretch the boundaries of what is possible for exceptional sonic performance. www.fidelity-magazine.com See less See more Sort by #2 · Scan Speak Revelator family of drivers, so they’re off to a good start. It certainly has a quirky look. #3 · #4 · Very nice. I use the poor mans center channel Two Paradigm S8's on their sides tweeters in the center.
List of angled in-ceiling speakers (and why on-ceiling bookshelf is better) for Immersive Sound formats (Atmos, Auro, DTS:X)
#2 · No love for PSB? CS AIC 860 (IN-CEILING 15 degree angled woofer baffle with fully pivoting/aimable tweeter) CS AIC 860 – 6" Angled In-Ceiling Speaker - PSB Speakers I'm seeing $649 each on Crutchfield and $849 a pair on eBay ($427.50 each) These go well with the PSB Imagine series of speakers according to their documentation. #4 · No love for the Focal 300 iclcr5?
Are towers useless if I have a sub?
#2 · I'd like to understand if it makes sense to upgrade the bookshelfs to towers since I have a subwoofer (SB 3000). Or is it a waste of money? My focus is just movies and games, no music. Yes. Total waste of money. Upgrade your center if you aren't 100% happy with it. Or, buy a second SB3000 if you want more even bass throughout the room. From increased output to balanced sound, going dual can add to your system. Learn why and if it’s the right move for your room. www.svsound.com #24 · Hi Zorba.
Church Speaker Position Suggestion Please (with photos)
#1 · Hello. I'm hoping to get some advice in some mounting of speakers. I've got our blueprints below as well as a photo showing the speakers location on the left and right. The Church is approx. 35ft x 35ft with 20ft ceilings. We have a pair of old Mackie SA1521's that are ancient. One of the pair is currently blown...for years. So sounds has been suffering. We've replaced them with a pair of Yorkville Elite EF12P's.
JBL HDI Speakers currently on sale - Harmanaudio
Not sure if this was the correct subforum or not, but just wanted to share that the JBL HDI 1600 / 4500 / 3600 and 3800 are currently on sale at Harmanaudio. Saw the discount link on slickdeals, so it looks like the discount only shows in your cart when you add the items.
Speaker Shootout at TSR in Colorado
Hey, all! The Screening Room AV is hosting a speaker shootout and audio event! It's the last weekend of this month in Colorado Springs and anybody who would like to attend is invited! It's not all about us, though. We've invited a couple of very special guests who will give presentations.
Special Closeout - JVC RS3000 4K PROJECTORS NEW IN BOX WITH FULL WARRANTY! Originally $18K, now $8999!
The Screening Room has a limited quantity of brand-new-in-a-box JVC DLA-RS3000 projectors in stock with full three year advanced replacement warranty! Original price on this projector was $18K, this special closeout gets it to you for $8999 (plus our actual cost on shipping if you are out of state). Also known as the DLA-NX9, the RS3000 originally retailed for $18K and was JVCs flagship projector before the laser-based machines were introduced last year.
Shootout: Revel F208, F226Be, JBL HDI-3800, L100
Even though this was a somewhat informal speaker shootout, we were still very careful about putting in many more controls than what speaker shoppers would typically encounter “in the wild,” hopping from store to store to audition speakers. Ideally we would perform a controlled "double blind" test like we did with our more formal comparison between the Salon2 and M2 speakers back in 2017.
