Spot gold and silver volumes were higher than the daily average over the previous twelve months, while everything else was down. Platinum spot volumes were marginally lower, but spot palladium and the derivatives in all four metals were well down.

As usual, there are some interesting patterns to explore. Trading patterns varied across the precious metals suite during October. Spot volumes were down across the board when compared with the daily averages over the whole January-September period, with the notable exception of palladium, which was very busy.

Platinum spot and forwards averaged twice the volume of palladium despite the palladium supply/demand balance being ~35% larger than platinum– underlying frequent anecdotal evidence of palladium’s relatively low liquidity.
Gold COMEX Trading Popularity on the Rise Compared to OTC
By Johann Wiebe and Rhona O’Connell Based on GFMS calculations, Over the Counter (OTC) transactions nudged up slightly in 2016, but in general remain in a sideways trend when considered over the last decade. Gold trading on COMEX on the other hand has gained considerable traction over the years, jumping last year by 38% to represent almost one third of annual OTC trading activity; its highest on record.
