Speed limits to drop on some highways after increase in crashes
Transportation Minister Claire Trevena is rolling back speed limits by 10 kilometres an hour on 15 sections of B.C. highway, including three on Vancouver Island. The move partly reverses a 2014 decision by the former Liberal government to increase speed limits on 33 sections and 1,300 kilometres of rural highway. A Transportation Ministry analysis concluded that the decision to increase speed limits led to a rise in crashes in which people were killed or injured.
Province to roll back speed limit hikes on some B.C. highways, citing increase in crashes
B.C. will lower speed limits on many of the rural highways on which the former government raised speeds in 2014, including three stretches on Vancouver Island. Transportation Minister Claire Trevena announced this morning the decision to drop speed limits on 15 of the 33 highway segments that saw speeds increased up to 120 km/hour.
Province to roll back speed limit hikes on some B.C. highways
B.C. will lower speed limits on many of the rural highways on which the former government raised speeds in 2014. Transport minister Claire Trevena announced this morning the decision to drop speed limits after a review of three years of police and ICBC data showed an increase in serious accidents associated with the higher speed limits. The most common contributing factor for crashes was driver inattentiveness but speed was also a major factor.
Higher speed limits on some B.C. highways expected to be scaled back
The British Columbia government was expected to announce Tuesday that some highway speed limit increases put in place more than four years ago are being dialed back. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claire Trevena was to be in Victoria to unveil what the ministry calls a safety announcement regarding changes to speed limits on certain B.C. highways.
Island Voices: Salmon farms are at the tipping point
By June 20, Premier John Horgan will decide whether to renew 20 salmon-farm tenures, one-fifth of the B.C. industry. This is a make-or-break moment for salmon farming in B.C. While the industry is doing its best to present itself as good for B.C., British Columbians have lived with this industry for more than 30 years, and the diversity of voices warning the premier not to renew these tenures has become an unparalleled crisis for the industry.
Little refugee’s life cut short
VANCOUVER — The pressure had been building for days. Abdullah Kurdi, his wife Rehanna and children Ghalib, 4, and Alan, 2, were holed up in the port city of Izmir, Turkey, the place where Syrian refugees desperate to get to Europe meet up with human smugglers. Abdullah had $5,000, sent by his sister Tima Kurdi in B.C., to pay for the voyage, but every day he found another reason not to go. He was terrified of putting the children in the flimsy dinghies the smugglers used.
Environmentalists 'red-wash' their fight against pipeline, First Nation chief says
VANCOUVER — Cancellation of the Trans Mountain pipeline would cost B.C. First Nations hundreds of millions of dollars in benefits, job training, and employment and business opportunities, according to Cheam Chief Ernie Crey. Crey has emerged as a leading voice for the First Nations that stand to benefit from the project, calling out environmentalists for “red-washing” their fight against the $7.4 billion expansion of the pipeline between Edmonton and Burnaby.

The other side of the housing coin
A buddy has the most protracted commute I know of — his contract job takes him to an eastern U.S. Rust Belt state where, lucky man, he is paid handsomely in Yankee dollars. Every month he flies back here to spend time with his family. His dual life offers him a perspective he wouldn’t otherwise have, and on his trips back home, he reports on life in the Excited States of America. The recurring theme: Canada and the U.S. are two very different countries.

Lions will wait when eight other CFL teams open season
There’s always an upside to a league schedule, given enough examination, and what the B.C. Lions discovered when given their list of games for the upcoming CFL season could be beneficial to coach Jeff Tedford and owner David Braley. The league will release the schedule on its website Friday morning, and the Lions are aware they will open on the road and play their first home regular season game at B.C. Place Stadium July 10.

illegal pot dispensaries not high priority
Vancouver police say they won’t bust down the doors of the city’s many illegal medical marijuana dispensaries April 1 when a new federal law will delegate weed production and distribution to a handful of licensed premises. Coun. Kerry Jang — who closely watches health issues — minced no words, saying the city believes the federal law interferes with the right of people to access medicine.
