PPWR trilogues must bring solutions to soaring recycled plastic imports
A healthy recycling value chain is essential to solve the challenge of plastic pollution in Europe. And EU policies must help make this happen. It is in the hands of policymakers to ensure that the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation safeguards the competitiveness of the EU plastic recycling industry and the objectives of the EU Green Deal. The urgent need for action has been confirmed in a recent issue brief based on a 2023 study.
Advancing innovation for rare disease patients: a call to action on Rare Disease Day 2024
This year we commemorate Rare Disease Day on the 29th February, the rarest of days. This globally coordinated movement aims to raise awareness about rare diseases and the impact they have on both the people living with them and their families. Rare Disease Day looks at the 36 million people in the EU who live with a rare disease1 to make sure, they are not overlooked.
Stronger together: Fighting rare diseases requires collaboration
Affecting up to 36 million people in the EU, rare diseases have a significant impact on the lives of millions of individuals. Often overlooked in the context of public health, it’s paramount we address these conditions. We are currently in the process of revising EU pharmaceutical legislation. Regulation on OMPs, introduced in 2000, aimed to address significant challenges that held back innovation. 23 years after the regulation came into effect, more than 200 new therapies have been developed.

Reflecting on this legislative review, I believe all stakeholders involved and affected by this revision should ask the following question; how can we work together with all stakeholders across the entire ecosystem to provide solutions that make a difference for all?
Health union for children with rare diseases
I am a nurse. That is my first education, and it will never leave me. It has taught me empathy of the kind that not just compassion and pity, but the ability to step into a painful situation of a person or family to assess what should be done and how. And then say it empathically, responsibly and professionally. This empathy – the unsentimental yet heartfelt search for the best, realistic option for the patient – is what I carry with me as a European politician.
Setting the scene for the future of people living with rare diseases
More than 20 years ago the European Union (EU) set the foundation for better treatment of the 6000 – 8000 identified rare diseases with the adoption of the Orphan Medicinal Products (OMP) Regulation. Back then only a few medicines were available for rare disease patients and just last year we celebrated the 200th Orphan Drug in Europe. This is considered a European success story and shows that targeted incentives could allow focused attention on those diseases which are often neglected.
