Another View: People need to stop spreading COVID-19
Breaking News Coronavirus: New single-day death records for California, Bay Area December 12, 2020 at 5:00 pm By Rich Lansburgh Here we are going into the last couple of weeks of this historic year and it looks like we are not doing well at all. We were hoping that by the end of the year we would be in a position to ring in the new year with this pandemic behind. But it’s just not going to happen. Not yet. Most of you know that on Dec.
Debates just another form of non-reality TV | Another View
Will a fly decide who we vote for? I admit that I watched both the presidential and vice-presidential debates or should I say shows. The only thing I can say about both shows is that I really miss live entertainment. I miss going to see actors in plays and musicals. I miss seeing my favorite bands, both local bands and famous ones. Instead, I watched both shows with one thing in mind. Why? Some people may think that presidential debates are historical.
Have we forgotten the meaning behind Labor Day? | Another View
Today Labor Day is no longer about trade unionists marching down the street with banners and the tools of their trade. Instead, it is a confused holiday with no associated rituals. It’s not like Christmas where we celebrate the birth of the Christ Child by giving each other stuff we don’t really need. It’s not like Thanksgiving where we gather extended families to stuff a big bird and then eat like we haven’t eaten in a week. There isn’t even a Hallmark card to mark the occasion.
Spread facts not rumor about the coronavirus |Another View
Recently I wondered where my trust should be applied regarding COVID-19 information. I realized I didn’t need to look far for good advice and to date it has worked out for me. So far so good. I then wondered about what America did during the 1918-1919 Spanish flu. Just how did the government respond to the flu outbreak? What did the scientists do? Certainly I understand it was 1918 and that both medicine and science were not as advanced as they are today.
Who do you trust with information about the coronavirus | Another View
Just who am I supposed to trust about COVID-19 virus? Recent polling shows that people across the partisan divide trust medical scientists more than we trust politicians and government officials. The levels of trust are similar to those found in public opinion surveys earlier in the pandemic, and in the years before it, suggesting that the politicization of the coronavirus response has not demolished the credibility of science.
Use of illegal fireworks was unacceptable in Woodland | Rich Lansburgh
Breaking News Coronavirus deaths surge in California, as state records deadliest day of pandemic July 9, 2020 at 12:01 pm ……and the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof thru the night that our flag was still there So it was. Another Woodland 4th of July has come and gone. Because of COVID-19 the City’s usual family friendly 4th of July events were canceled. We truly hope to bring those events back next year.
‘Wow,’ what a year for Father’s Day | Another View
I have a feeling that years from now we will wake up some morning and look back on this eventful year, 2020. I also think it will take years for politicians, historians, sociologists, scientists and scholars of all disciplines to figure out what really happened this year, and we are only halfway through the year. I think the most common expression will be….
A pivotal moment in our community’s history | Another View
My column today was going to be about the American flag. I was going to go into the history of how we ended up with one flag to represent our unity against tyranny.
Road reconstruction advances across Woodland | Another View
By Rich Lansburgh and Tom Stallard In a few weeks, West Main Street from West Street to County Road 98 will finally be completed. It certainly is taking shape. We look forward to major improvements which have been much needed. Our next major road project in Woodland is the completion of West Court Street from West Street to Ashley Avenue. Construction on West Court should begin around June 29. We are making great progress in making tremendous improvements to our major roadways.
Yolo County, Woodland preparing for a ‘new normal’ | Another View
No one likes being told to wait. Americans are a people who love to be active, to engage and to move forward. It’s consistent with our love of freedom and our national character. The current “shelter at home” period has tried the patience of a great many people and that’s understandable. At the same time it has worked.
Hair care, health care and getting a buzz cut | Rich Lansburgh
While so much of Woodland society has come to a halt we know that our hair just keeps on growing and growing. It might not have been the first concern on our minds when faced with the prospect of staying indoors and physical distancing. Nor should it be. We have more serious things to worry about like getting back to work; like hoping this virus goes away before it claims more of our people. But it’s a problem many in our city are now trying to puzzle through.
City budgets can be boring but they’re important | Another View
Last Tuesday night City Council members were briefed by city staff on the proposals for budget year 2020-2021. Because of the economic issues left in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, the news was relatively grim. The presentation took a while because of the complexities involved in summarizing a budget involving over 100 different funds to run the city. You might be thinking that listening to a budget presentation isn’t the most exciting thing to do. You would be right.
Lawmakers urge people to stay safe from coronavirus | Another view
By Bill Dodd, Cecilia Aguiar-Curry and Rich Lansburgh Woodland faces unprecedented challenges as the coronavirus pandemic forces us to pause our normal lives. Families grapple with economic uncertainty as businesses shut down and workers stay home to slow the spread. Parents experience the challenge of home-schooling kids. And there is widespread fear about what infection could mean to loved ones. Sadly, Yolo County recently suffered its first coronavirus deaths.
Don’t be stupid, stay home and coronavirus free | Another View
Selfish. Stupid. Dangerous. Evil. Daily I get messages from residents using these descriptive words about people who appear to be ignoring local orders to shelter in. I also hear other words, swear words, that don’t belong in public print. They ask why the City isn’t putting a stop to these people. I too am dismayed at what appears to be some people who go about their business as if they were immune to both the virus as well as the orders to stay home.
Woodland mayor expresses pride in ‘Yolo Way’ | Another View
While this COVID-19 catastrophe continues to evolve almost hourly I wanted to focus on Woodland. The other day Woodland resident Dave Wilkinson sent me some old Daily Democrat articles which are more than 100 years old. In the fall of 1918 there was a worldwide flu epidemic that resulted in millions of deaths. In 1918 our own city leaders gathered to make plans to deal with the outbreak just like we are doing today in response to COVID-19.
Let’s do our part to protect our loved ones from coronavirus | Guest Opinion
On Tuesday night all members of the Woodland City Council and key city staff participated in the first-ever teleconferenced City Council meeting. This was considered a Special Meeting with the purpose of updating the council and the public on what the City is doing and has been doing regarding the COVID-19 virus as well as considering a couple of key measures related to our citywide response.
Woodland mayor says growing gang violence poses risk to us all | Another View
If you live in Woodland you have probably read news accounts and social media reports about what most of us have known or suspected — gang violence is ramping up in our city. Our Police Chief Derek Kaff reported that in 2019 there were 31 confirmed shootings, four of them resulting the murders of four young people. Ten others were injured in those shootings. So far in 2020 our city has experienced no less than three shootings.
Woodland is responding to homelessness | Guest Opinion
As members of the Woodland City Council, we share the frustration felt by many over the homeless crisis in our community. While we continue to work on strategies to reduce the incidence of homelessness and minimize the adverse impacts of transients in our community, we are concerned about the rhetoric and tone of some who would advocate for simplistic solutions that ignore the complexity of the problem, the law, and the need to treat everyone with dignity and respect.
