Holiday Geek Gift Guide 2019: Books, eBooks, and AudioBooks By Empress Eve | @ | Tuesday, November 26th, 2019 at 1:35 pm The end of the year — and the decade! — is coming and with it is the holiday gift-giving season.
BookExpo 2019 Publisher Spotlight: Weldon Owen
Back in June, BookExpo and BookCon came to Jacob Javitz Convention Center in NYC where book lovers galore swarmed publishing booths, with industry people there for the expo and book fans for the con. One of the most interesting booths I visited was Weldon Owen, an imprint of Insight Editions (of such visually brilliant tomes such as Die Hard: The Ultimate Visual History and The Art Of The Strain). They have a plethora of beautiful books coming out that I am dizzy with excitement about.

INTERVIEW: George Caltsoudas Talks TREK Comic Covers
Illustrating comic book covers is an art form. Its presentation needs to grab a reader’s attention on a shelf littered with hundreds of different titles. For a licensed property like Star Trek, cover art becomes even more important to generate new fan interest as well as keeping regular readers hooked. Luckily for IDW Comics, one of its Star Trek variant cover artist, George Caltsoudas, is more than up to the task.
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Mirror Broken #3 Review ⋆ Rogues Portal
Shock and awe is the best way to describe Star Trek: The Next Generation – Mirror Broken #3. Shock at the portrayal of the Next Generation characters who populate this Mirror Universe and awe at their brutality. David and Scott Tipton with J.K. Woodward continue to take readers on a fantastic ride. The first two issues, of the now-undetermined number of issues to the miniseries, have set up #3 as Picard and company attempt to claim the Enterprise-D for themselves.
Star Trek: Boldly Go #10 Review ⋆ Rogues Portal
“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Reminders; sometimes they are used for as simple as a recollection of items needed to be procured, while other times they are essential to remembering core ideas – what it means to be an American for instance.
Elsewhere #1 Advanced Review ⋆ Rogues Portal
Pioneers throughout history have never produced the amount of speculation that Amelia Earhart’s disappearance has provided in the 80 years since her disappearance. Copperhead scribe Jay Faerber throws his hat into the ring with the theory that she did not die in the Pacific, but instead was transported to an alien world in Elsewhere #1.
Countdown to Wonder Woman: Interview With Susan Eisenberg ⋆ Rogues Portal
This is an excerpt of an interview Susan Eisenberg gave to Rich Schepis in August 2015 “Wonder Woman has been just this massive gift for me in my life.” Voicing a character for most animated series lasts a few seasons, if the actors are lucky. However, in the case of Susan Eisenberg, she has been playing Wonder Woman on and off (mostly on) since 2001.
Countdown to Wonder Woman: Interview With Aaron Lopresti ⋆ Rogues Portal
This is an excerpt of an interview Aaron Lopresti conducted with Rich Schepis in 2015. How would you describe your time on Wonder Woman? Great. Gail Simone was terrific to work with. Matt Idelson was the editor and was also a lot of fun to work with. We started off my run with a Sword and Sorcery genre story, so how could I possibly complain? It was kind of sad to move off that book but things inevitably change. What was the biggest obstacle you faced drawing Wonder Woman?
Countdown to Wonder Woman: Interview With Mike Deodato, Jr. ⋆ Rogues Portal
This is an excerpt of an interview Rich Schepis conducted with Mike Deodato, Jr. in August 2015. Catching up with Mike Deodato, Jr., the Brazilian artist reminisced about this 13-issue run on Wonder Woman from the mid-1990’s. He spoke via video from his studio and sets the record straight on who created her new uniform during his run and why she appears so sexy in some people’s opinions.
Countdown to Wonder Woman: Interview With Meredith Finch ⋆ Rogues Portal
This is an excerpt of an interview Meredith Finch did with Rich Schepis in 2015. Were you a Wonder Woman fan before taking on the title? I think that it would be hard to grow up in the ‘70s and not be a fan of Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman. There aren’t many of my friends who don’t remember twirling around, arms crossed in front. Was it intimidating taken over such a beloved and iconic character? Absolutely.
Star Trek: Waypoint #5 Review ⋆ Rogues Portal
SCIENCE! In the early 1980s, Thomas Dolby once sang about a woman who blinded him with science. Today, Star Trek: Waypoint #5 brings readers two tales from the blue uniforms of Starfleet, better known as science division personnel. Experiencing any art form, whether it is literature, music, art, or comic books is difficult to do without considering the lens of the current environment in which it is experienced.
Star Trek: The Next Generation – Mirror Broken #1 Review ⋆ Rogues Portal
Hope is a word all too familiar with stories involving the Mirror Universe, which is quite ironic considering its dark existence. Star Trek: The Next Generation – Mirror Broken #1 once again introduces the idea of hope into the Universe’s ongoing narrative. This time however, the story will not be about a Vulcan attempting to instil reform against a specific ideology or a group of rebels seeking to break free of servitude.
Star Trek/Green Lantern: Stranger Worlds #5 Review ⋆ Rogues Portal
Blockbuster movies screening in multiplexes over the summer are the bread and butter of the film industry. Box office receipts can make or break a studio’s bottom line for the year. Paramount and Warner Brothers should look no further for its next blockbuster franchise – Star Trek/Green Lantern, as Mike Johnson’s Stranger Worlds is summer spectacle at its best.
Star Trek: Boldly Go #7 Review ⋆ Rogues Portal
“They will not stop until they assimilate every last one of us.” Warnings often fall on deaf ears, especially when it comes to the agendas of governments and individuals. Yet, Captain Terrell makes a strong argument for the Federation and Romulan Empire to work together to prepare for the Borg’s certain return.
