Opinion: Will America ever admit to being conned by Trump?
It was common knowledge in Kennebunk that Grampa Gilpatric (1883-1964) was a “Chrysler man,” which meant little to his 10-year-old grandson in 1951. My grandfather was a stoic man who said little and never talked about politics. However, another hint came with a comment about his displeasure that our government would subsidize farmers who may have deserved no assistance if they were unable to make it on their own. As the years slipped by, I never had much interest in politics.
Opinion: Presidential election could result in a real loss of liberty
As an elderly former Republican who has held elective office, I was pleased someone had thoughtfully posted on Facebook the personal contact information for our Secretary of State in Maine, Shenna Bellows, allowing me to easily send her my compliments for the way she handled a difficult part of her job. Not sure why I would need her husband’s name or location of her home.
Maine Voices: The times have changed. Our gun laws must change with them.
A chance meeting in the woods with the local game warden in 1959, when I was 17 and only weeks from high school graduation, resulted in a friendly conversation in which the warden informed me that he would do what he could do to help me, but my sawed-off shotgun was a federal offense. After being put in a small windowless room at our town police station, I had time to think over my situation. The warden knew me well from my love of the outdoors, which involved hunting, fishing, trapping and guns.
Maine Voices: As need for electricity grows, nuclear power should play larger role
Maine Voices increase font size Small and safe reactors can be built close to where the demand is greatest, thus eliminating lengthy, wide transmission lines, dams and fossil fuels. By Richard BedardSpecial to the Press Herald Share The former Republican in me says it is OK to cut a tree, because our need for electricity is so great. Oh, how I miss Dick Hill, longtime University of Maine mechanical engineering professor, at a time like this.

Annuity Market Outlook for 2019Annuity sales are poised to climb in 2018 after several years of decline. The death of the Department of Labor's fiduciary rule is spurring sales in certain categories. What's in store for next year?
Maine Voices: Republican Party has lost its way - Portland Press Herald
COLUMBIA FALLS — What thoughts should an elderly, agnostic Republican share with others in regard to the state of the party of his grandfather, when the party leadership seems comfortable with alternative facts and doublespeak? Elderly I am; agnostic in all things, religious and political, and I did register as a Republican. So, why all the confusion in recent years, which has only gotten worse in the past several months?

Welcome to our first quarterly buyers' guide for structured notes. If an investment ever needed a buyers' guide, it would be structured notes. As any smart investor knows, a basic rule of investing is don't buy what you don't understand. At their worst, structured notes can be incredibly complex. They can have barriers, leverage, caps, automatic early-redemption features, coupons that accrue only when stock indexes lie within a certain range — and that just scratches the surface.

Financial regulation might be likened to plants that are slow bloomers. We're more than seven years removed from Lehman's traumatic collapse and the seizing up of credit flows, yet many rules drafted to shore up bank balance sheets and prevent future crises are only now starting to take effect. Slow bloomers indeed, but look out: New regulations have the potential to transform the landscape.
