Stories that matter
In the decade before COVID, I worked as a writing tutor at the Madison College Writing Center. During those years, it moved twice, eventually morphing from a tiny windowless space to a spacious, newly constructed second-floor room where I met with students at a small, semicircular table beside a wall of windows. We’d sit close together, most often with a hard copy of a written assignment on the table between us.

Carol singing with the Unitarians
A little after 4 o’clock on Christmas Eve, I’m standing in the balcony at the Unitarian Universalist church on University Bay Drive, singing “The First Noel” with 400 other people. I’m not a Unitarian, or even a Christian, but I love Christmas carols. The music shoots memory darts into the vivid brightness of my childhood: winter skies at dusk, the silence following a deep snowfall, Sunday mornings at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, where I grew up.

What is important?
In the mid-1990s, I moved into a five-person cooperative household on Madison’s east side where a good friend already lived. The house was ramshackle. If you placed a marble on the floor, it rolled toward the backyard. But that backyard was spacious and filled with gardens and greenery that spilled all the way down to the river. I ended up living there for two decades. I made wonderful, lifelong friends, and, perhaps inevitably, I also endured periods of conflict and tension.
This month's personal essay is by Richard Ely. - Isthmus
The other night at Trader Joe’s, my little basket of items — two peaches, a quart of yogurt, a bottled smoothie, and a bottle of sparkling water — elicited an enthusiastic response from the tall, athletic checkout guy. “Perfect,” he said. “Awesome!” He stuffed two bags together. “How’s your day going?” “Going good.” “Awesome,” he said. When I inquired, it turned out that his own day was also awesome. With practiced efficiency, he filled the bag and announced the total — less than twenty bucks.
Climbing the rock
The year was 1976. I was 26. By then, I had mostly stopped doing foolish things or stumbling inadvertently into harm’s way. No more bad LSD trips, extreme fasting experiments, near drownings, or getting into the wrong car with the wrong driver. No more leaping before looking and almost dying in the process. Well, almost no more. It was summer. My friend Bill and I had driven across the country in a Dodge Coronet station wagon that had belonged to my mother. We were exploring the Oregon coast.
Caregiving 101
We all get older all the time. We have no choice in this. No going back, no standing still. You keep aging; then you die. I’m 73 now. I was 50 when I moved from Madison to Providence, Rhode Island, to take care of my 86-year-old mother, who had dementia. By then, she was old and skinny and slightly stooped, with a soccer ball-sized belly. Most of her teeth were gone. She wore adult diapers, and I was the guy who changed them. She spilled food on herself.
‘Sketchy Ideas’ from TNW Ensemble Theater showcases the art of Randall Berndt
The windows of Randall Berndt’s spacious second-floor art studio look out on a winter sky of bare treetops. He says he loves watching birds and the occasional fox, the ever-changing clouds. When making an artwork, he can become temporarily stuck, wondering for instance how to depict the sky. Not a problem. He can open one of his several hundred art history books to see how the old masters did it — his intention not to copy, but to be inspired. Or he can look outside.
Giving thanks for FoodShare
“Thank you for calling the Capital Consortium,” the familiar automated male voice greets me. I push 1 for English and, from a series of options, choose 2 for “elderly, blind, disabled, or in a nursing home.” In my early 70s, I qualify as “elderly.” Finally, I wait on hold while scratchy-sounding music is repeatedly interrupted by recorded messages reminding me to remain on the line to be helped by the next available representative.
All things must pass
Three dusty, dilapidated cardboard boxes of record albums sit on our front porch, perhaps 50 LPs per box. A few weeks ago, there were twice as many. Soon there will be none. Yes, I’m giving away my album collection. Friends and neighbors have been stopping by, taking an armload or a record or two apiece. A WORT-FM programmer took 100. I suspect Saint Vinny’s will get the last batch. Once, years ago, I had 600 albums, but who has space for all that? Not me.
Karabits and the Bournemouth SO bring Messiaen's “Song of Love” to Leeds
Chances to hear Messiaen's epic Turangalîla-Symphonie are few and far between and should be grasped accordingly.
A Faint-Hearted Fanfare: The Hallé in Manchester
The Hallé opened its season with this programme of three familiar Russian works under conductor Pablo González. The least familiar of the three, Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night overture, received a spirited performance from all sections and got proceedings off to a rousing start which the rest of the performance only fitfully delivered.
Neither Shocking Nor Shabby: Tosca at Llangollen
This semi-staged performance of Tosca opens the annual Llangollen Eisteddfod in splendid style, lit by the star power of local hero Sir Bryn Terfel and the ascendant Lithuanian soprano Kristine Opolais, with fellow Lithuanian Kristian Benedikt completing the trio. This is an opera that stands or falls by the commitment the three principal singers bring to their roles: none were found wanting.
Museum piece? Stephen Medcalf offers an intriguing Walküre at Grange Park Opera
The Theatre in the Woods, like Valhalla, awaits completion. It is an astonishing feat to have a building ready for public performances a mere eleven months after work began but exposed brickwork and an absence of carpeting tell us that this is still a work in progress.
A Flesh & Blood Tristan at Longborough
There’s no escaping the fact that Tristan und Isolde is a static opera: things happen very slowly (though each act ends very quickly), the characters are endlessly articulate about their own dilemmas and the central love scene is a Schopenhauerian discourse on the impossibility of achieving love in mortal life.
Oration in Memory of Abraham Lincoln
Delivered at the Unveiling of The Freedmen’s Monument in Lincoln Park, Washington, D.C. Friends and Fellow-citizens: I warmly congratulate you upon the highly interesting object which has caused you to assemble in such numbers and spirit as you have today. This occasion is in some respects remarkable.
