Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was a research editor and blogger for Encyclopedia Britannica.

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to use my research talents to bring interesting and little-known science stories to the general public.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My articles on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the Haiti earthquake for Encyclopedia Britannica.

What's your favorite drink?

Wine. Or a good coffee.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Outside. On the lakefront, in the woods, on a prairie. Or: in a library or bookstore.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Quillette, Areo, National Geographic, Discover, Science, Audubon.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That science writing has to be dry. It doesn't. All sorts of juicy and fascinating stories that come out of the scientific disciplines.
