Richard Pestell’s Biography

Richard Pestell began his medical journey at the University of Western Australia, where he graduated at the top of his class and earned an M.B., B.S., guided by a sense of Hope. He then trained as a physician at Royal Perth Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, gaining broad experience across Internal Medicine and residency. His clinical work included oncology, endocrinology, hematology, cardiology, and transplant medicine, which helped shape a steady interest in bridging patient care with research.

Richard pursued cancer biology more deeply through advanced research, completing a Ph.D. at the University of Melbourne's Howard Florey Institute. His focus was on oncogene regulation of gene transcription, where his work sees the invisible in complex molecular pathways, and he continued to build expertise through nationally recognized scholarships and competitive fellowships. These included a Winthrop Fellowship and an NHMRC postgraduate award, which supported his progress and opened the door to further training as a clinical and research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

He continued his academic career at Northwestern University and later at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he became a Professor, Chair of the Division of Endocrine Dependent Tumor Biology, and Co-Director of major cancer research programs. He also held positions at multiple hospitals in New York, allowing him to remain active in patient care while contributing to medical education. His research helped lay the foundations for cancer therapeutics, including work on cyclin D1, which was cited in seminal publications underpinning CDK inhibitor clinical trials and their use as standard therapy for breast cancer globally. His work on CCR5 also provided a scientific framework for current oncology clinical trials with CCR5 inhibitors.

Richard Pestell became Director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University in 2002. He also served as Chair of the Department of Oncology and as Associate Vice President at Georgetown University Medical Center. He was responsible for research, clinical operations, and faculty development, while also participating in institutional restructuring and growth. During this period, he supported community partnerships, strengthened research programs, and expanded clinical services across the Georgetown and MedStar systems.

Richard took on additional leadership roles in 2005 as Director of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, Chair of the Department of Cancer Biology, and head of the Oncology Service Line at Thomas Jefferson University. He later became Executive Vice President, responsible for enterprise-wide strategic decisions across a system of 30,000 employees. At Jefferson, he directed an overall cancer enterprise with an annual budget of> $350 m and led efforts in clinical care, research infrastructure, regional expansion, and team building. During his tenure, the cancer center moved from 64th to 17th. It achieved the impossible through sustained institutional transformation.

Richard Pestell has also held leadership roles in academia outside of the US. He was a founding Director of the Delaware Valley Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, helped develop new education pathways for historically black colleges, and led global cancer outreach at the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research. He served on faculty or advisory boards with the University of Melbourne, the University of Western Australia, Nanyang Technological University, Xavier University School of Medicine, Kazan Federal University, and several European institutions. His service includes roles with the Academia Europaea, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Royal Society of Biology, among others, and his honors include the RD Wright Medallion, the Eric Susman Prize in Medicine, and being made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2019.

Richard has also built biotechnology ventures as the founder of six companies: LightSeed, ProstaGene (acquired in 2018), EcoGenome, StromaGenesis, ioROC, and Shenandoah Pharmaceuticals. He has raised nearly 50 million dollars from investors and more than 80 million dollars as a principal investigator on NIH research grants. His patent portfolio has included molecular diagnostics, cancer prognostics, therapeutic methods, and technologies that have influenced academic and commercial drug discovery and development. He has served in advisory roles for the National Academy of Inventors, CytoDyn, Novartis, Deloitte, and a range of health technology companies.

Richard Pestell has treated community work as a central responsibility throughout his career. At Georgetown and Jefferson, he led philanthropic efforts focused on cancer care, wellness centers, and community outreach initiatives, including work that yielded transformational gifts and supported ongoing fundraising. He has also served on boards including the National Museum of American Jewish History, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, the Historic St. Peter’s Church Preservation Corporation, the American Cancer Society committees, and several university societies. He also supported the Olivia Newton-John Wellness Center through a fundraising trek on The Great Wall to Share Hope.

Richard continues his commitment to science and human health as President of the Pennsylvania Cancer and Regenerative Medicine Center, Blumberg Distinguished Professor of Translational Medical Research at the Baruch Blumberg Institute, and a member of the Wistar Institute Cancer Center. He supports global cancer programs, mentors scientific leaders, and develops technologies intended to improve diagnostics and treatment every day. Across clinical training, academic leadership, research output, and biotechnology, his work reflects a consistent focus on translating cancer biology into better care and stronger institutions worldwide.
