Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. Played it with my kids, and had to explain what a typewriter was before it made sense.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
You have a chance to observe the world, and a duty to report. Celebrate what is good, expose what is bad and point at what could be better.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer the truth.
What's your favorite social network?
They all suck.
Who do you wish followed you?
Follow me as you wish. I write for myself and my community.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
We analyzed accident data at the intersection outside the school grounds. They added a signal. Now I get stuck there every time I go home.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
In 2018, a man shot his way into the newsroom where I was editor. We never stopped publishing.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Can you afford to do this for five years?
When's the best time to pitch you?
Mon-Fri, 9-5.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Lies.
What's your favorite drink?
Nada.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Annapolis is a small town. Most people don't realize it is a window on the world.
