NFTs and AI Are Unsettling the Very Concept of History
Nonfungible tokens and artificial intelligence make tracing the origins of a digital object more fragile. What are the world's archivists to do? As an archivist, I'm excited about what disruptive innovations like nonfungible tokens ( NFTs) and artificial intelligence may mean for archives. But I'm also worried. These developments pose existential threats to our field, and by extension, to the survival of human history and culture. I give old films away for free.
The making of Being Frank: The Chris Sievey story: “a glorious and ridiculous ride” | Sight & Sound
Web exclusive Steve Sullivan with an oversized Little Frank to promote Being Frank: The Chris Sievey Story (2019) If you saw Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank (2014), starring Michael Fassbender as an eccentric, reclusive singer beneath an outsize papier-maché head with Pacman-shaped eyes, you might imagine you know the story of Frank Sidebottom. Especially since Frank was co-written by Jon Ronson, a one-time member of one of the real Frank’s troupes, the Oh Blimey Big Band. But that was largely fiction.
The Image Book review: Jean-Luc Godard’s ruminative and radical montage | Sight & Sound
The titular figure of Leonardo da Vinci’s St John the Baptist addresses his gaze to the viewer, looking out from the painting with a smirk. His right hand points towards heaven, towards salvation. Although there is some debate among art historians, the enigmatic painting is widely considered to be the artist’s last.
They Shall Not Grow Old review: Peter Jackson brings controversial colour to WWI footage | Sight & Sound
Re-presenting archive film has always been risky, except when it’s too dull to stir any emotion. I remember the condescension that hung over the first presentation of Kevin Brownlow’s reconstructed Napoleon in 1982, when the idea of piecing together this battered and much-reviled carcass, with a patchwork orchestral score, seemed absurd to many.
Film of the week: Arcadia remixes rural Britain | Sight & Sound
After the critical buzz generated by Scottish filmmaker Paul Wright’s first feature, For Those in Peril (2013), a striking, hallucinatory piece about a survivor’s grief after a tragedy at sea, it’s perhaps a surprise that his follow-up is a found-footage collage on the theme of the British landscape.
Film of the week: That Summer, a palimpsest of Grey Gardens memories | Sight & Sound
“Accidents are very important,” says Peter Beard near the start of Göran Olsson’s third found-footage documentary feature (after 2011’s The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 and 2014’s Concerning Violence). He’s talking about his own extensive body of work as a photographer, collage artist and diarist, but he might as well be describing a certain type of documentary-making, in which the film’s eventual subject emerges via happenstance rather than conscious planning.

Situation critical | Mark Cousins’ Dispatches | Sight & Sound | BFI
Are we ‘in’ the internet like fish are ‘in’ water? Has it become the material in which we live, our lens, our medium? Has it killed off various kinds of life, like ice ages do? Is it a nice age or a vice age? Judging by the talk in a little bailiwick that I know – film criticism – the answer to these questions is a variation on ‘yes’.
Film of the week: The Stuart Hall Project | Sight & Sound
from our October 2013 issue “Stuart Hall was kind of a rock star for us,” writes director John Akomfrah in a statement accompanying his latest essay film. “For many of my generation in the 70s… he was one of the few people of colour we saw on television who wasn’t crooning, dancing or running.
