Rick Torrey, also known as Richard Torrey, is a retired entrepreneur who owned and CEO of Basin Sports, Out Of Bounds Snowboard Shop, and True Wheels Bike Shop. With a deep passion for skiing and mountain biking, he established these businesses, which grew to be well-regarded in their fields. His dedication to outdoor sports and entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to turn his interests into thriving businesses that became fixtures in their community.
In the mid-1970s, he began his professional career at an insurance company, where he worked as a programmer. Though he demonstrated significant skill in programming, he spent most of his time in technical support, contributing to developing more efficient access methods for computer systems—innovations that even leading companies struggled to achieve. However, after several years, he explored other career opportunities, eventually pursuing his entrepreneurial dreams.
He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and later moved to Ludlow with his family. From an early age, he worked various jobs, such as mowing lawns, babysitting, painting houses, and delivering newspapers. These early experiences shaped his strong work ethic and taught him the importance of financial responsibility as he grew up in a family facing economic challenges.
After completing high school, he worked full-time while attending classes at a technical school for computer processing. He also took night courses at local colleges and worked at Pratt and Whitney during this period. In addition to his professional pursuits, he coached Little League hockey, helping his team win regional championships. His career in the technical field continued to develop, but he eventually began shifting his focus to business.
In 1975, he purchased his first home in Windsor, Connecticut, and transitioned into a programming role at an insurance company. A decade later, in 1986, he bought a second home and started planning his future as an entrepreneur. His journey began when he lent money to a friend to buy a ski shop, but when the shop went out of business in 1991, he bought it from the bank. Despite having no experience in retail, he dedicated himself to learning the business and turned the shop into a leading name in the industry over the following 32 years.
Encouraged by the success of the ski shop, he expanded his operations, opening a snowboard shop in 1996 and later a bike shop. His daughter joined the business that same year, and his wife, who had assisted part-time, became the full-time CFO in 2010. Throughout his career, he managed multiple construction projects, increasing the size of his business from 1,000 to 24,500 square feet, solidifying his position as a dominant figure in the local retail scene.
Rick Torrey sold his businesses in August 2022, having built them into successful operations. Now retired, he enjoys skiing in the winter, mountain biking in the summer, and traveling. He reflects on a life of hard work, passion, and dedication to his pursuits, proud of his accomplishments and legacy.
