Penguins Report Card: Team’s Biggest Issue, Did Sullivan Stumble on Solution? Original
It was a better game, and the Penguins could accept the overtime loss because they dominated the third period but had some bad luck before their 3v3 overtime struggles reemerged in a 3-2 OT loss to the Detroit Red Wings at PPG Paints Arena Wednesday. The final score was indicative of the relatively even game and a fair result, considering the Penguins spotted Detroit a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the second period.
Report Card: That Was the Penguins?! A Mold-Smashing 20 Minutes Original
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pittsburgh Penguins have an aversion to multi-goal leads and discipline. Like anxiously trying to score goals, struggling to defend is in their team DNA stretching back decades. The second period conformed to the script that you and they had seen far too often. A 2-0 lead against the Washington Capitals had become a tied game by the end of 40 minutes, and the Penguins were mired in the quicksand. Then, something changed. Or, maybe something finally … FINALLY … clicked.
Penguins Grades: Sullivan Rips ‘A Few Guys’, Not Hard to Figure Out Who Original
vicRALEIGH, NC — Coach Mike Sullivan praised much of his team. They outshot the Carolina Hurricanes 36-18 and had more scoring chances, too. Yet they were shellshocked in the locker room following their 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Penguins have just two wins in their 10 games (2-6-2) but it was how they got to their result Thursday that chapped Sullivan. He didn’t name names, but he had praise for many of the players and scorn for one who rightfully drew his ire.
Penguins Report Card: Sullivan Rips 3rd Period Performance; Another Whiff in Big Game Original
ELMONT, NY — It wasn’t perfect and not always pretty, but the Penguins were able to take advantage of the decimated New York Islanders lineup for 40 minutes. New York is missing all three of their regular left-side defensemen and called up a 2022 fourth-round pick to plug part of the lineup hole. The Penguins pounced, but didn’t finish the job, and another lead in a big game became another tale missed opportunity.
Dan’s Daily: The Penguins Gamble; Bruins Coach Benches Stars
The Pittsburgh Penguins enjoyed a needed off day Sunday, and they’ll hit the ice this morning at the UPMC Lemieux Complex before departing for a three-game road trip against Metro Division opponents that will surely be a litmus test for their renewed defensive commitment and top-heavy lineup. To that end, we looked at the sustainability of the “other three” Penguins lines since Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin united on the top line.
What About the Other 3 Penguins Lines? Looking at Lineup Sustainability Original
Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan’s decision to put his best three players on one line was a calculated gamble. Still, the results of putting Evgeni Malkin and Rickard Rakell on the wings beside Sidney Crosby have paid off immediately. Three straight games of two goals by the line. Rakell scored two goals, and then Crosby scored a pair in two straight games. The Penguins have won two in a row, and the line has put up ridiculously imbalanced numbers in the Penguins’ favor.
Penguins Room: Crosby Scores; Letang Chirps, ‘That Freaking Mustache!’ Original
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ three-game homestand ended on another feel-good moment as Blake Lizotte scored the empty net goal to seal the win, and defenseman Ryan Graves dropped the gloves at the final horn to defend his team’s honor after a couple of dirty hits by Montreal Canadiens defensemen Arber Xhekaj. Xhekaj speared Michael Buntings in the nether regions during a second-period power play and tried to knee Noel Acciari in the final seconds. The Penguins won 3-1, their second win in a row.
Crosby Fills the Net, Penguins Squash Canadiens Original
PITTSBURGH — Defensively structured. Patient. And Sidney Crosby. The Pittsburgh Penguins limited the mistakes that have made them the worst defensive team in the NHL. They got a pair of goals from an all-time great and took advantage of an opponent on the ropes to beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 at PPG Paints Arena. Crosby has scored four consecutive Penguins goals over two games, including Thursday’s win over Anaheim.
Penguins Wrap: Rust Injured; Fleury’s Night; Crosby & Malkin
The Pittsburgh Penguins found a solution to their three-goalie situation, at least temporarily, with a move for Tristan Jarry. Speaking of goalies, the club also celebrated the final visit from beloved Marc-Andre Fleury over the past week. With the losses piling up, the lines not only got scrambled, but in a big move Evgeni Malkin moved up to the wing on Sidney Crosby’s line. Finally, for a night, they got things together enough to pull out a win, something that had been elusive for a couple weeks.
Coach’s Debrief: The Penguins Repeatable ‘Blueprint’ Original
Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan called his team’s win over the Anaheim Ducks Thursday a good “blueprint” for the team’s success. Coach Francis Anzalone puts the Penguins game on the whiteboard and takes you inside the coach’s video room for what the Penguins did well. The Coach’s Debrief isn’t hot takes but is for fans who want to know more about the nuts and bolts of the Penguins’ scheme and game that even Sullivan often doesn’t want to talk about.
Malkin-Crosby Brilliance Puts Dubas on the Spot; Will He Respond This Time? Original
Paging general manager Kyle Dubas. A Penguins trade is probably necessary if the goal is to win. The Pittsburgh Penguins eventually pummeled the road-weary Anaheim Ducks into submission Thursday. Yet the Penguins’ 46-shot barrage wasn’t complete until Sidney Crosby pulled a heel-toe stop-start breakaway move in overtime to end the six-game winless streak.
Penguins Practice: Malkin Not Skating Original
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was not on the ice for the start of practice Friday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. There was no immediate explanation for his absence. Malkin leads the Penguins with 14 points. He has seemed to be flying around the ice the past couple games after moving to left wing on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell. He had 21:53 of ice time Thursday in the Penguins’ 2-1 overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks at home.
Dan’s Daily: NHL Trade Talks Heat Up; Crosby & Malkin Rescue Penguins
What is a coach to do when most of his players are more geared toward low-scoring third-liners? Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan broke with his tradition and has paired Sidney Crosby with Evgeni Malkin, eschewing lineup balance in exchange for adequate levels of offense, and the duo with Rickard Rakell dominated the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday. We’ve got the full analysis and some video, too.
