At All Costs - Mishpacha
Rav Shach was an enigma. The venerated Ponevezh rosh yeshivah wasn’t shy about sharing his daas Torah with an often-resistant public, yet was so humble that he couldn’t understand why throngs would approach him for brachos or want to give him honor.
Heal the Hair - Mishpacha
Hair “Porosity” If hair hasn’t been subjected to the ravages of chemical processing or violent heat styling, it’ll most likely be undamaged — or low porosity. The hair cuticle, consisting of overlapping scales, has a coat of lipid on top. Yet if hair has been dealt with ruthlessly, that lipid layer is stripped and the cuticle beneath is broken and craggy, rendering it technically “porous.” When hair is still close to the scalp, fresh from the follicle, it’ll be low porosity.
Le Chaos - Mishpacha
Le Chaos The scenes out of France in recent days might be even more apocalyptic than the 2020 George Floyd riots in the US. The historic Limoges town hall collapsing amid a roaring inferno, masked hoodlums dousing a woman in flames on a Paris street, and a helpless storeowner pleading political clemency from looters are all sights that call to mind previous maelstroms in French history.
“Shouldn’t Our Son Spend Simchas Torah with His Family?”
Dear Rebbi, We recently celebrated Simchas Torah, one of my favorite days of the year. I don’t mean to sound like a kvetch, but something really bothered me — and my wife as well. Our ninth-grader, Shloimy, who (as Rebbi knows) has a very lively personality, was not home with us. Instead, he went back to yeshivah to celebrate Simchas Torah with his rosh yeshivah and fellow students. To an extent, I get it.
Reach for the Peak
Embedded in Matan Torah itself is the Torah’s attraction to the humblest of mountains. Torah is most comfortable there — it shines brightest through these untainted prisms of the truly selfless. Rav Yisroel Meir Kagan, rosh yeshivah of Yeshivah Toras Chaim of Denver, slipped away from This World last Monday, 8 Cheshvan, at 93 years old. Only those closest to him heard the crashing thunder of his passing. For most others, it was a whisper. He was that humble. He was that great.
