Tread Carefully: AI and Compliance in Accounting for Staffing Firms
AI is being adopted by staffing firms worldwide, most visibly in recruiting and service delivery, but its rapid expansion into back-office accounting is just as significant. In staffing firm accounting, where payroll and billing rules vary by client, processing is time-critical and accuracy is non-negotiable, AI-driven workflows offer compelling advantages. They can deliver faster turnaround times, improved quality and the ability to scale efficiently as billable headcount fluctuates.
A Paddler's Guide To Finding Yourself
Long trips, short trips, any trips out on the water are money in the Bank of the Soul. We can catch a sunset paddle, make a full day of it or head off on a weekend outing, sleeping on the beach and enjoying a mini adventure. These short trips are typically experienced with a high level of stimulation. Odds are we’ll pack a cell phone along, not only for emergencies, but to say hi to significant others from the evening campfire.

Harrowing details emerge after surfer killed by shark off popular beach Australian biologists said Sunday a great white shark measuring up to 12 feet likely killed a 57-year-old surfer off Sydney this weekend, as harrowing details of the attack emerged and authorities stepped up surveillance for the predators. The experienced surfer, identified by Australian media as …
Workers’ Control and Nationalization
Comrades, we have spent a lot of time discussing the Venezuelan revolution over the last few days, and one of the most important elements we have discussed is the question of cogestion, or co-management. Cogestion can mean many different things to many different people, but it is clear that for the Venezuelan working class the struggle for co-management is a struggle for genuine workers’ control and workers’ management, and the socialist transformation of society.
Canada: why would Alberta separate?
For many outside Alberta (and Saskatchewan), the prospect of a referendum on Alberta’s separation from Canada is perhaps perplexing. But such a referendum in Alberta, which is likely to be held, is the logical conclusion of a long historical process that stretches all the way back to Confederation and how the Prairie provinces joined the Canadian federation. [Originally published at marxist.ca] Western alienation The Prairie provinces initially joined the federation as a colony of Canada.

What is behind Trump’s threat to annex Canada?
The idea that the United States would annex Canada might initially seem to be beyond absurd. But there is most definitely a method behind Trump’s madness. [Originally published at marxist.ca] The newly elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada over the past several weeks. While initially written off as a joke by Canadian officials, the thrust behind Trump’s threats has dire implications for Canadian capitalism.
Haiti: Prime Minister Henry resigns as regime collapses
A gang-led coup in Haiti has led to the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. US imperialism is scrambling to regain control of the situation and has organised negotiations to create a transitional council to take power. But with the Haitian state in utter disarray, the gangs are moving to solidify their control of the capital Port-au-Prince. There had been a brief decline in gang-driven killings and kidnappings after the emergence of the Bwa Kale movement in April last year.

Haiti: ‘Bwa Kale’ movement emerges in fight against gang scourge
After suffering for years under a reign of terror at the hands of increasingly powerful gangs, the people of Haiti are standing up and fighting back to regain control of their neighbourhoods and cities. A movement called ‘Bwa Kale’ (literally ‘peeled wood’, and a metaphor for an act of swift justice) emerged at the end of April in response to an alarming rise in gang-related violence this year.
Counter Clockwise: A Solo Circumnavigation of Vancouver Island
In the winter of 1952, when I was a little boy of five, my family sailed across the North Atlantic from Europe on a small troop ship. The storm we endured, the mountainous seas and howling winds, and the mélange of fear and awe it generated, will forever be etched in my soul. It may have been less than the perfect storm for the captain, but for me, it was mighty impressive and the first time I realized there was a power greater than my parent’s ability to protect.
Learn How To Fish Shallow Rocky Rivers With An Inflatable Kayak
For most of the year, many mountain rivers are the boney remnants of their fleshed out, springtime high-water selves. But fishing can be red hot in the summer and fall months and for those of the shot-gunning persuasion, bird hunting season opens in early October. Enter the inflatable tandem kayak. Rigged out right, a big inflatable boat allows me to get down the river with my gear and my sanity intact.
Testing the Nemo Chogori
Heading sea kayaking, canoeing or rafting? The Chogori by Nemo is your answer to a good night’s slumber after a day of stroking. Before we get into the Chogori I have to mention its predecessor, the Moki. The Moki was single-wall, somewhat larger and sported only a single vestibule, while the Chogori is a solid 4S/3P mountaineering dome with one intriguing feature: you can link two of them together at their front doors.
Field Tested: Jetboil's Genesis Basecamp System
Camp stoves have always been a bit of an odd fit for me. A no-brainer if we’re running rafts, when we carry the big Coleman two-burner and a small propane tank. But scaling down to sea kayak we traditionally packed aboard a couple of backpacking stoves. Some years, it’s butane cylinders, others it’s white gas, but always a bit of a head-scratcher. At least we had redundancy if one went south.
Petzl DUO S Headlamp
Most of us will write this off as gear bling—who needs a headlamp that’ll nick us for nearly half a grand? I can stumble back to my tent on the river in the dark just fine, you say. No doubt you can, but that’s just the point. There’s a new paradigm for sport lamps and it’s not about stumble. It’s about actually seeing. Lighting tech has made huge strides in recent years, with lithium-ion batteries and LED bulbs revolutionizing the industry. Sure, they’re pricey.

The Shackles of Imperialism - Third World Debt
Since the tsunami disaster in South Asia in December of last year, the bourgeois media have paid a lot of attention to the misery and poverty of the Third World. Many people, including British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, have called for the cancellation of Third World debt. Will this actually be done, and if so, what would it really achieve?
Anglers Take Motorized Kayaks To Their Fishing Limits
Find The Limits Of The Motorized Kayaks âDude,â I called from deep in the bushes. âYeah?â Steve shouted from camp. âGot some bear scat here.â I poke it with a stick. It was packed with salal berries in a soft crustâMother Natureâs bakery. Steve showed up to look: âNot too fresh.â âFresh enough,â I said. âIt rained yesterday.â We looked around in silence.
Helix MD Pushes The Limits of Motorized Kayak Fishing
As an outdoor writer, I have spent many years exploring the waters around Vancouver Island, paddling and fishing out of a touring kayak. Now, for the first time I put down the paddle in favor of a motor—Wilderness Systems’ Helix MD. Along with Steve Thomsen I spent a week on a tiny, remote island fishing the North Pacific and putting this excellent piece of engineering through its paces. The results were invigorating.
Fishing Bunsby Islands, BC; What you need to know
After reaching Rob Lyon's travelog from Bunsby Island, British Columbia, (https://www.rapidmedia.com/digital-editions/kayak-angler/issue-34) check out these guidelines for a safe and productive trip. Some people have asked whether it’s even legal to fish and camp in the Bunsby Islands. The answer is many layered and my understanding is this.
Canoeing in Kerouac Country
This story featured in the 2012 July issue. "Desolation's way up there, Ray, six thousand feet or so looking into Canada ... thousands of miles of mountains, deer, bear, conies, hawks, trout, chipmunks. It'll be great for you Ray." Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums. I had a call from an old friend who lives on Ross Lake in the North Cascade Mountains. Tom had worked summers at the floating resort there back in the '60s when the rest of us were dropping acid.
Kayak Fishing Camp-Out: Bunsby Islands
The only way to reach Big Bunsby Marine Provincial Park is by boat. After making the crossing from Vancouver Island, there are no roads and no people. While the islands are isolated, they provide safe harbor from the open Pacific making the reefs, bays and inlets fishable in almost any weather. There are no campsites or hiking trails, but popular stops are marked with driftwood.
Black Sabbath @ Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre, 17th April ’16
Black Sabbath! The End! Well, well, well it all boils down to this after forty seven years of touring, writing and recording Black Sabbath play their final show. It was hard to know what to expect from this show but boy oh boy was this show epic beyond all proportions. Having missed out on previous tours this show has more than made up for it leaving a positive memory seeing Black Sabbath at the top of their game.
Katrina Leskanich
The smash hit Walking On Sunshine literally defined an era and had huge success right around the world for Katrina and The Waves. The band’s history is deep and extensive but Katrina Leskanich is solo these days still playing the hits and bringing a lot of joy to a lot of people.
Sebastian Bach - Across The Ocean
I’ll be Bach! Sebastian Bach hardly needs any introduction but he is returning to Australia for a long overdue tour. Recently married, writing memoirs of being in Skid Row, promoting the album Give ‘Em Hell, starring in a new TV show and contemplating the next album it is all go, go, go for Sebastian Bach. Across The Ocean were privileged to be talking candidly about everything and anything with Sebastian Bach.
Safety Sally on the Stikine | Duct Tape Diaries | NRS Community
I kneeled in the current, placed hands on milky cobbles. Black spruce leaned over the banks, trunks arched back toward the sun as if straining away from collapse into the river. I, on the other hand, was hungry for it: I bent my elbows into the clear, green water, let my chest slip beneath, then neck, then head. I pressed upward again, gasping and sputtering, wiping mud from my skin.
Lessons from a Baby Boomer Paddling Expedition | Canoe & Kayak Magazine
It was an honest-to-God Boomer trip, not the Cocoon cast exactly, but we had several guys pushing the later digits: one dude at eighty, myself at sixty-eight, our photographer on a slow boil sixty-three, and the rest of the guys at about the half century mark. We were a hands on bunch of boomers though, including a ranger, a Marine Colonel, an expeditionary, a West Pointer and a Golden Gloves champ, but the fact remained that ocean kayaking for older paddlers is a little different.
4 Indie Board Games for Your Next Paddling Trip
I was stuck with my buddies for eight days in a leaky cabin on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island once. We had a stash of whisky, a bag of BC’s finest and a board game along to bide our time. And it was memorable. One thing we dig about our sport is how it gets us in the flow. City lives, working lives, too much thinking day in and day out, and our soul begs for the juice. Finding it is finding our grove. Feeling confident on our line through a gnarly run.
Field Tested: Convert 3 Tent by Sierra Designs
When we first tried the Convert 3, I could see the upside right off the bat. Namely a bomber, tunnel style tent that weighed about half that of the big domes I’d been using. And, something I like so much in sea kayaking shelters, it has the option to sport not just one but two roomy vestibules. With its low profile and linear shape, it reminds me of a crouching tiger and would look pretty cool with black stripes.

Take Easy Street To The Launch With A Kayak Cart
The evolution of the kayak from a feather-light sealing baidarka to a Mad Max fishing chariot begged a means of getting it around. Our boats are beamy and heavy and a bitch to schlep from rack to water. To this end, a number of different kayak cart styles have evolved and vie for our attention. Take Easy Street to the Launch with a Kayak Cart I prefer a cradle style, center-mount cart. No scupper carts for me. The bias reflects my concern with damaging a scupper.
