Letter: Term limits
I enjoyed the coverage of Congressman Johnson’s visit with our Rotary Club. I, too, have been very interested in the congressional term limit issue. Since I was not in attendance, I will only comment on what was included in the coverage. The first point is that South Dakotans want federal term limits. We term limited our state legislators in 1992. One point that I didn’t see was that I believe term limits require a constitutional amendment.
Woster: Hockey - South Dakota's growing winter sport
Sometime back in the 1980s, a guy used to show up at a city park in Pierre on Sundays in winter and skate around the ice rink with a hockey stick in his hands. I’d lived my whole live in South Dakota. I’d never seen a hockey stick before. As a kid, I’d seen newspaper pictures of guys with sticks, but those guys were professionals, playing for the Bruins or Canadiens.
Guebert: In the heat of the night
Of all the daily chores my father performed on the southern Illinois dairy farm of my youth, the most vital to me each winter morning was his rekindling of the banked fire in the tall, round wood stove that dominated my mother’s kitchen 60 years ago. The stove was, no kidding, a Warm Morning model. It was as tall as me then and more round than my great Uncle Honey. Somehow Dad, despite his city upbringing, knew how to manage this iron maiden for maximum effect in minimum time.
Letter: Hyperinflation
To the Editor: Hyperinflation is systemic — ignore the fools’ talk about “transitory,” “supply and demand,” “temporary shortages,” etc. The economic gurus who drove the world into the current disaster are filling the pages of the Western media with wild “explanations” for the current rapidly expanding global inflation.
Woster: Get to living while you still can
For my birthday one morning last week, I took a drive in the country. Actually, I drove to Mitchell and back for an appointment with the young guy who is helping me keep my macular degeneration under control. So, really, all I did was keep a medical appointment. That’s what passed for birthday fun when a guy turns 78. The appointment happened at the Mabee Clinic. I have a soft spot for the name Mabee. A surgeon by that name removed a cyst from near my daughter’s eye when she was about three years old.
