Tykes youngster revels in Fisher mania

Tykes youngster revels in Fisher mania

www.ecb.co.uk — Record-breaking schoolboy Matthew Fisher was left beaming with pride after he claimed a wicket on his first appearance for Yorkshire. Aged just 15 years and 212 days, Fisher became the youngest post-war player to feature in a competitive county match and made an impression with bat and ball in the three-wicket Yorkshire Bank 40 defeat to Leicestershire Foxes at Scarborough. The ever-smiling youngster trapped Shiv Thakor lbw for a duck with the third ball of his second spell, prompting jubilant celebrations with his team-mates and elation among his friends and family in the crowd.

Yorkshire's Matthew Fisher becomes youngest post-war county player

The Guardian — At the age of 15 years and 212 days, Matthew Fisher became the youngest post-war player to feature in a competitive county match as he turned out for Yorkshire, contributing ten runs and the first of what will surely be many wickets on a debut watched by, among others, Geoffrey Boycott and Dickie Bird. The York schoolboy, who had to reschedule his GCSE French oral exam in order to play, picked up one for 40 from seven overs and struck 10 from four balls in beating the previous record held by Royston Gabe-Jones, who was 15 years and 274 days old when he played for Glamorgan in their county championship match against Leicestershire at Cardiff in 1922.

Rugby Ace Reflects On His Faith

www.oneandother.com — © Simon Cocks on Flickr York Baptist Church kicked off their Real Lives week with an interview with Leeds Rhinos rugby league star Jamie Jones-Buchanan on Monday night. Starting a run of seven talks in seven nights, with a diverse selection of guests, Jones-Buchanan was the first noted figure to tell host Roger Carswell about how finding faith has changed his life. The six-foot, fifteen-stone second-rower cut a striking figure on stage with his characteristic bushy beard, but what became quickly apparent was that there was more to Jones-Buchanan than meets the eye.

Craig Charles review

Craig Charles review

www.oneandother.com — Craig Charles is many things. At one time or another, he's shown his talents as a performance poet, stand-up comedian, presenter, musician and actor. On Bank Holiday Sunday, he displayed his credentials as a DJ, and as a packed house at The Duchess can attest, he wasn't half bad. As a presenter of his eponymous Funk and Soul Show on BBC Radio 6 Music for more than a decade, the longest running programme on the network, it came as no surprise that Charles has a depth of musical knowledge, and an extensive catalogue of records to draw upon, to make for a superb night of funk, pop and soul classics.

The promotion of this LP brought the band to Fibbers, where it was the audience's turn to look on. In addition to their geographic detachment from Manchester, Dutch Uncles have also embraced their separation from the mainstream. This intentional step away from the formulaic towards the experimental has paid dividends, acquiring the attention and admiration of a clutch of critics since their formation in 2008.

Stats reveal just how multi-national the Premier League has become

Independent — When Manchester United were awarded the Barclays Premier League trophy following their victory against Swansea earlier this month, all eyes were on Sir Alex Ferguson and his title-winning side. But for those who looked round the stadium that day, on display were an assortment of flags that would have looked more at home at a United Nations conference. South America's representation, provided by Brazil, Ecuador and Mexico, heralded the success of Anderson, Rafael, Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez. Japan saluted Shinji Kagawa, while the European contingent, from six different nations, were also in attendance.

White Rose in bloom

White Rose in bloom

www.ecb.co.uk — These are good times for Yorkshiremen. Thanks to Joe Root's performances for England's Test side, the White Rose county is being heralded as the source of one of the country's finest cricketing prospects. Furthermore, with the inclusion of Root's fellow middle-order colleague Jonny Bairstow, and Tim Bresnan, in the 12-man squad to face New Zealand, Yorkshire can boast the largest representation of the current England contingent. Bairstow and Bresnan bolster the sense of pride felt by their fellow Yorkshire folk, but it is two former England internationals who are helping the county ascend to the pinnacle of the county game.

But for former Bombay Bicycle Club backing vocalist Lucy Rose, the transformation is well underway. As her performance at the Duchess showed, Rose is no longer a bit-part player. Confidently at ease as the central focus of her headline UK tour, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter has flourished with her new-found prominence, which has been five years in the making.

With Ashley Giles in charge for his first major international tournament, Miller believes England have the potential to achieve success in the one-day format this summer. www.oneandother.com — © Jeremy Jenum on flickr GD Star Rating a WordPress rating system It is not often the case that the dance floor at the Duchess is home to candlelit tables and comfortable armchairs. Nor is attentive quiet and polite applause usually the crowd's characteristic response. Yet, when David Knopfler brought his acoustic country folk to the well-known magnet for late-night revellers, the venue was transformed into a Tennessee lounge for a couple of hours at least. Knopfler is entering his thirtieth year as a solo recording artist after leaving Dire Straits, the band he formed with brother Mark in 1977.

www.oneandother.com — © alterna2 on flickr When I Am Kloot arrive to play the Grand Opera House on Tuesday, the folk rock trio will be greeted by notably different surroundings from their last visit to York. In 2010, the Manchester three-piece came to Fibbers to promote their sixth studio album, The Sky at Night, a gig that bassist Peter Jobson recalls did not go to plan. "People couldn't see what we were doing," he told One&Other. "Our singer is a bit short and I sit down when we play. The stage was a bit low. "I think the Grand Opera House will suit our music a bit better."

fourfourtwo.com — Friday 12 April 2013 11:08 Since they were introduced in 1987, the play-offs have given hope to Football League sides languishing in mid-table around the time the clocks go forward. Here are some of the more impressive late promotion surges of the play-off era, as recalled by Rob Ellis... Cambridge (Division Four - 1989-90) Cambridge had already enjoyed a remarkable campaign before the promotion race reached its final stages. With 36-year-old John Beck in his first managerial role following Chris Turner's resignation, the U's caused one of the major cup shocks of the season by beating Millwall in a fourth-round replay at the Abbey Stadium.

www.oneandother.com — The York Literature Festival was brought to an outstanding finale on Sunday as the Theatre Royal welcomed poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy. At an event co-hosted by the TakeOver13 Festival, Duffy enchanted her audience with readings from three collections of her work, The World's Wife (1999), Rapture (2005) and The Bees, her most recent collection published in 2011. Duffy is one of Britain's most popular and distinguished poets, with her exceptional talent rewarded in 2009 by her appointment as poet laureate, a role which has moved her even further into the public consciousness.

Paloma Faith Review

Paloma Faith Review

www.oneandother.com — York was dusted with glitz and glamour on Friday as Paloma Faith brought her Fall to Grace national tour to The Barbican. The Brit-nominated songstress performed a 90-minute set that ushered a fervent crowd through her mix of retro pop-soul hits against the setting of a 1940s Las Vegas hotel ballroom. With Paloma, an entertaining and memorable evening is guaranteed. The show is filled with a theatricality which has become her trademark, emanating from her experience as a burlesque dancer, actress and cabaret performer earlier in her career.

Guillem Balague Interview

Guillem Balague Interview

www.oneandother.com — Spanish football expert Guillem Balague can sense changing tides. After working in England for 20 years, he believes British attitudes towards European football are undergoing real transformation, among both the media and the general public. The reason behind his assertion is the success of his recent biography Pep Guardiola: Another Way of Winning. Balague's extensive, illuminating and detailed exploration of the unprecedented success Guardiola enjoyed in his four-year spell as Barcelona manager has far exceeded the original expectations of his publisher.

Paulo Sousa: the forgotten man of the Swansea story

Independent — Swansea's remarkable success this season has drawn acclaim and admiration from all sections of the football community. While Michu's goalscoring exploits take centre stage, and their unexpected progress in all three major domestic competitions continues unabated, Michael Laudrup is establishing for himself a place alongside Brendan Rodgers, and Roberto Martinez before him, in the esteemed managerial lineage of 21st-century Swansea. The fairytale narrative of a fallen giant, a once title-challenging side consigned to the fourth tier of the football league, only to dust itself down and return to the higher echelons of the beautiful game leaves football purists purring.

thisisfutbol.com — The 23-man squads for the Africa Cup of Nations have been finalised, leaving a number of Barclays Premier League and npower Championship managers considering their losses. Many have been fortunate. Martin O'Neill will be able to call upon Stephane Sessegnon, while Demba Ba has to opportunity to continue his promising start under Rafael Benitez at Chelsea, more than making up for the combined loss of midfielders John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses. Adel Taarabt and Marouane Chamakh were not included for Morocco, boosting Harry Redknapp and Sam Allardyce's squads.

www.ecb.co.uk — Lahiru Thirimanne's maiden international century eased Sri Lanka to an eight-wicket victory in Adelaide that levelled the one-day international series with Australia. Thirimanne brought up his hundred and the winning runs in style with a square cut that raced to the boundary, as the tourists improved significantly on their disappointing performance in Friday's opening match at Melbourne, which the hosts won by 107 runs. Australia had earlier been dismissed for just 170 after losing the toss, with Brad Haddin the only batsman to offer any real resistance.

www.ecb.co.uk — England start a new era in Rajkot on Friday with Ashley Giles taking charge for the first time in an international. The tourists are seeking to follow their impressive 2-1 Test victory with success in the shorter format following an outstanding 2012 that saw them rise to top spot in the world rankings. Giles, the new one-day international and Twenty20 head coach, inherits a side which won 12 ODIs last year, losing just two, with series victories over Pakistan, West Indies, and Australia. Their 4-0 triumph in the United Arab Emirates last February is a reasonable gauge of continued success, and England will be further boosted by their superb performances on the sub-continent already this winter.

Sorry Arsene, Champions League exertions are no excuse for Arsenal's woeful domestic form

Independent — Arsene Wenger is facing one of his most difficult periods as Arsenal manager. Lying 10th in the table, 15 points behind league-leaders Manchester United, the Gunners have had their worst start to a Premier League season in the Wenger era. In response to their recent poor results, epitomised by Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Swansea, Wenger has described his side as jaded, suffering a lack of sharpness, attributed to the energy expended in ensuring Champions League progress. This term, the North London club has advanced from the group stages of Europe's elite competition for the 13th consecutive year.

One&Other - Review: Les Miserables

www.oneandother.com — Les Miserables has been given a new lease of life, with Tom Hooper's star-studded film set for release this winter. Hooper's grand interpretation is primed for Academy recognition at the Oscars next year, but a Hotbuckle production has brought a less ostentatious staging of the classic tale to the York Theatre Royal. Featuring a five-person cast, adapted and directed by Adrian Preater, this fresh look took place in the intimate surroundings of The Studio. Preater's interpretation is loyal to Victor Hugo's great 19th-century novel; themes of romance, human weakness, and redemption all emerge through the course of the two-hour performance, which remains firmly rooted in the politics, moral philosophy, and revolutionary unrest of the era.

Rafael Benitez will bring changes, but Chelsea's youngsters will continue to languish just as the...

Independent — Rafael Benitez's tenure as Chelsea manager is well underway, with noticeable differences between his vision for the team and those of his predecessor, Roberto Di Matteo. Where the Italian took on the challenge of securing league success by fielding a side characterised by dynamism and zeal, epitomised by the thrilling 4-2 victory at White Hart Lane in October, Benitez has begun by encouraging discipline and restraint from his players, resulting in two goalless draws. As the new manager begins to introduce his footballing philosophy to his players, the blueprint set out by Di Matteo at the start of this campaign will gradually be disassembled and rebuilt, except for one key area; a disinclination to blood homegrown talent.

One&Other - Review: King Lear

www.oneandother.com — A number of York students were presented with an early festive treat this week as Young People's Shakespeare performed Tim Crouch's new edited version of King Lear in a number of the city's venues. The national tour, featuring nine members of the Royal Shakespeare Company, descended on York High School, the De Grey Ballroom, and the Theatre Royal to deliver one of Shakespeare's most renowned plays in a captivating 75-minute staging of stripped-down theatre. The aim of the project is to provide the collection of young audiences with an accessible, entertaining, and engaging entry into Shakespeare's work, helping to break down the complex and distancing aspects of the play to inspire York's young people to fall under the spell of the country's most famous playwright.
