The fadXDEBA locus of Staphylococcus aureus is required for metabolism of exogenous palmitic acid and in vivo growth
USA300∆fad exhibits an altered ability to metabolize palmitic acid through incorporation into phospholipid As growth of USA300∆fad was abruptly halted upon challenge with exogenous palmitic acid, we conducted experiments to determine if this could be correlated with altered membrane phospholipid composition.
Novel Functions and Signaling Specificity for the GraS Sensor Kinase of Staphylococcus aureus in Response to Acidic pH
Research Article Robert C. Kuiack, Ruud A. W. Veldhuizen, Martin J. McGavin Ann M. Stock, Editor DOI: 10.1128/JB.00219-20 ABSTRACT Although the GraS sensor kinase of Staphylococcus aureus is known for the sensing of and resistance to cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAMPs), we recently established that it also signals in response to acidic pH, which is encountered on human skin concurrently with CAMPs, antimicrobial unsaturated free fatty acids (uFFA), and calcium.

DNA Binding and Sensor Specificity of FarR, a Novel TetR Family Regulator Required for Induction of the Fatty Acid Efflux Pump FarE in Staphylococcus aureus
Research Article Heba Alnaseri, Robert C. Kuiack, Katherine A. Ferguson, James E. T. Schneider, David E. Heinrichs, Martin J. McGavin Ann M. Stock, Editor DOI: 10.1128/JB.00602-18 ABSTRACT Divergent genes in Staphylococcus aureus USA300 encode the efflux pump FarE and TetR family regulator FarR, which confer resistance to antimicrobial unsaturated fatty acids. To study their regulation, we constructed USA300 ΔfarER, which exhibited a 2-fold reduction in MIC of linoleic acid.
DNA binding and sensor specificity of FarR; A novel TetR family regulator required for induction of the fatty acid efflux pump FarE in Staphylococcus aureus
ABSTRACT Divergent genes in Staphylococcus aureus USA300 encode an efflux pump FarE and TetR family regulator FarR, that confer resistance to antimicrobial unsaturated fatty acids. To study their regulation, we constructed USA300ΔfarER, which exhibited a two-fold reduction in minimum inhibitory concentration of linoleic acid. farE expressed from its native promoter on pLIfarE conferred increased resistance to USA300, but not USA300ΔfarER.
