Innovating Online Learning for Lifelong Success
Institutions are continuously adapting to meet evolving learner demands, and technology is now a big part of how students learn. So, institutions must learn about and step into the online learning environment without compromising the many advantages of in-person learning. In this interview, Andrea Gregg discusses the evolution of the online course design space, challenges in the online environment and how to be effective in this space to meet online learner needs.
Gibson: Natural Gas Is Our Biggest Local Climate Change Challenge
By ROBERT GIBSON Chair Los Alamos County Board of Public Utilities What greenhouse gas (GHG) emission source is our largest and will be hardest for Los Alamos to reduce or eliminate? No, it is not automotive tailpipes or billowing smokestacks at the plants that still supply much of our electric power. It is natural gas, here called simply “gas”. Gas is a hydrocarbon, like coal, oil, gasoline, and wood. Burning hydrocarbons produce carbon dioxide (CO2), the principal GHG.

Gibson: Electric Rates - Past, Present And Future
By ROBERT GIBSON Chair Board of Public Utilities The electricity commodity rate (cost per kilowatt-hour) for retail Los Alamos customers was increased 9% last October. It will increase another 9% this July. These hikes seem steep, but are the first since February 2015. In that time, the most familiar measure of inflation, the consumer price index (CPI), has increased about 34%. Adjusted for inflation, our electric rate will have gone DOWN 16% in that time.
Gibson: Large-scale Solar Power Is Coming To Los Alamos
By ROBERT GIBSON Chair Los Alamos County Board of Public Utilities By late 2026, the majority of Los Alamos’s electric power will come from the sun! The County recently inked a 20-year deal to purchase power from a large photovoltaic field and battery bank to be built a few miles northwest of Farmington. Remarkably, the new solar power will cost LESS than the coal- and gas-based power it replaces.
Predictors of compliance with higher dose omega-3 fatty acid supplementation during pregnancy and implications for the risk of prematurity: exploratory analysis of the ORIP randomised trial
Methods This investigation used data collected in the ORIP trial, a multicentre, double-blind, randomised controlled trial designed to evaluate whether n‐3 LCPUFA supplementation during pregnancy reduces the risk of EPTB.
Gibson: Gross Receipts Tax Increase Should Be Rejected
By ROBERT GIBSON Los Alamos On June 27, our County Council will consider a half-percent increase in our local gross receipt tax (GRT) rate. It should be rejected. Governments provide essential and beneficial services and impose taxes to pay for them. A few tax rate increases are justified. Most are not, although specious arguments are always made that they are needed to provide some essential or popular service. This proposed increase is unique in that no argument is made that it is needed.

Brassed Off: What The Trumpet Taught Me by Kim Moore
arts The struggle to retain a sense of purpose and identity in a landscape one no longer recognises is a transparent subtext of the film Brassed Off; transparent perhaps because the film’s director, Mark Herman, overlays his narrative with a vigorously-prosecuted political patina that sacrifices subtlety to melodramas of sentiment and pathos.

Burned By Light: Dovetailing - Gathered Notes
arts Never underestimate the simple pleasure of contemplative quiet. Several visitors to Dovetailing - a collaboration of artwork, installation, music and word, which was exhibited at the Quaker Meeting House of Farfield near Addingham in the Summer of 2021- were moved to feelings of ‘calm and wellbeing’. Their thoughts, some of which are now collected in an impressive anthology of responses to the exhibition, indirectly corroborate the themes explored.
Night Swimming:Towards A General Theory Of Love by Clare Shaw
arts A paradox lies at the heart of Clare Shaw’s shattering new collection: striving, almost childlike, to order love in an anxiety of intractable images, her disclosure of unease is counter-intuitively strident. For performance is one of Shaw’s strongest suits and the banging of a resounding drum is a sincere means of attempting to negotiate a passage towards self-understanding.

Since it was passed in 2019, Quebec’s Bill 21, a “secularism” bill which prohibits Quebec’s public service workers from wearing religious symbols while carrying out their civic duties, has received backlash from the nation, with many calling the bill discriminatory and arguing that it disproportionately affects Muslims, who have already faced increased violence in the two decades since 9/11.

A Climate Emergency with a Side of Medium Transit
Independent student press since 1966. Wondering where your bus is? Wondering where your bus is? Many Peterboroughians don't have to think about public transit. This was made clear at the April 19 Special General Committee meeting where it was reported that in 2006 87% of citywide trips involved a car. This is projected to decrease to 83% by 2031.
The Results Are In: City Council Ignored Us
The decision making process leading to Council not moving ahead with a Universal Change room design for the Peterborough Sports and Wellness Centre demonstrates that people are unheard and shows that Council's procedures can be barriers to engagement while the most impacted are silenced. The issues of the lack of public engagement are not limited to one issue, however, this Council decision shows that there are cracks in how decisions are made which can cause people to be further oppressed.

There are multiple variables that determine whether a place gets more COVID-19 than others. This is in addition to small population sizes.

Certainly, there has been a reduction in emissions, but feedback loops increasing the effect of climate change are in place. During this pandemic, I have read about improperly disposed medical waste, like gloves and masks, in parking lots and how it could spread disease.
