The Poem Against Stalin Osip Mandelstam: The Arrest On May 14th, 1934, at 1:00 am, Osip Mandelstam was arrested by the secret police at his apartment in Moscow. Such arrests were routine in Stalin’s reign of terror, which lasted until Stalin’s death in 1953. One could be arrested and jailed or killed for the flimsiest of reasons or no reason at all.
A Poem “kapuskasing, northern lights, star trails and an ice fishing hut” by themadcanudist is licensed under CC BY 2.0. I raise my axe against the night. The air is like gaseous crystal. I’m drunk on pine needles and smoke. The living lake is two feet down except the square I’ve kept open. Like dead fish, stars fall on black-gray ice. The axe strikes badly with a thud. Then, the rhythm found, the cuts are deepening now. I’m through with a crack.
Wade Davis begins his book Magdalena near the mouth of Colombia’s principal river, in Bocas de Ceniza on the northern coast, on a jetty that extends many kilometres into the Caribbean Sea. Men and women who work the surrounding waters live in shacks that precariously line the breakwater, and on their bleached walls, they’ve painted humble poetry that praises the fishing, the peace, and the sound of the waves.
