For decades, the Australian film and television industry has projected a specific mythology of the nation to the world: sun-drenched, rugged, predominantly Anglo-Celtic, and deeply familiar. Yet, this narrow projection has long failed to mirror the complex, multicultural reality of modern Australia. While recent metrics—such as Screen Australia’s landmark Seeing Ourselves research—show incremental progress in on-screen representation, the systemic barriers preventing true inclusivity remain firmly entrenched. To understand why transformation feels agonizingly slow, one must look at the structural architecture of the industry and ask a critical question: Who holds the keys to the kingdom, and who is routinely locked outside?
