4. Possibilities Statistically, the standard African American family history should have much in common with the portrayal of a family in Alex Haley’s Roots, but many exceptions should also exist. How often an African American family has a past waiting that could now be recovered by diligent research cannot be quantified. It would likely be a high percentage, however, as many people today descend from so few individuals in the past.
