New York’s brave EMTs need a rescue — but their union blocks the way
The FDNY's Bureau of Emergency Medical Services is in dire need of a new contract for its workers, according to former FDNY commissioner Robert Tucker. Christopher Sadowski Serving as the 35th commissioner of the FDNY was the honor of a lifetime. We accomplished so much during a very short tenure, setting this great department up for operational success for generations to come. But one nagging issue that has not been settled: a contract for FDNY’s Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
New York’s 2025-26 Budget Includes Immediate Labor Law Reforms, Important Changes to Pay Frequency Laws
Quick Hits The 2025–26 New York state budget includes significant amendments to the New York Labor Law, impacting wage-and-hour enforcement, liquidated damages, and child labor penalties. The amendments bring long-awaited clarity to New York pay frequency claims, including interest-only damages for a first violation.
Federal Lawsuit in New York Raises Questions About Remote Workers’ Rights Under State WARN Laws
Quick Hits Employees sued Paramount Global and CBS Interactive after mass layoffs in New York in 2024. Employees claim the companies did not provide ninety days’ notice under New York’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. But the companies argue they fulfilled their legal duty because the workers stayed on payroll and benefits for ninety days.
Temperature Relaxation and Magnetically Suppressed Expansion in Strongly Coupled Ultracold Neutral Plasmas
Abstract Ultracold neutral plasmas provide a platform for studying transport properties in an idealized environment. In this dissertation, transport properties in a Ca$^+$/Yb$^+$ dual species ultracold neutral plasma and a Ca$^+$ magnetized ultracold neutral plasma are studied. In dual species plasmas, we study ion-ion temperature relaxation. We compare measured relaxation rates with atomistic simulations and a range of popular theories.
Increasing Grid Resilience Under Differing Distributed Control Architectures
Recently, we’ve written about PNNL’s innovative work to demonstrate how a utility power system can safely operate using a control system integrated with the Open Field Message Bus (OpenFMB) framework to increase system flexibility and resiliency. PNNL has successfully tested these concepts in a laboratory setting, and have analyzed how OpenFMB concepts can support innovative transactive energy schemes for increasing resilience.
Increasing Grid Resilience with Transactive Energy
Days ago, you predicted a relatively minor storm. Now, forecasts predict a much stronger one. Fortunately, your utility has implemented technologies and controls to enable a self-healing grid. Nevertheless, you activate your storm response team and your distribution operators are poised to employ additional switching operations to minimize potential outages. What more can you do? How about calling on customers with distributed energy resources (DERs)?
Centralized and Distributed Controls for Increasing Resilience
How does a utility prove that its operational power system can safely increase system flexibility and resilience by incorporating distributed energy resources (DERs)? Are changes required to the operational behavior of control systems? Will controls and applications function properly if DERs are added to the network alongside traditional utility assets? Is it necessary to build a simulated test environment to figure this out?
A SARS-CoV-2 Cluster in an Acute Care Hospital
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic continues to cause high case counts, hospitalizations, and deaths worldwide. Clusters have been reported in many different settings, but relatively few have been reported in acute care hospitals; indeed, some studies suggest that hospital-acquired SARS-CoV-2 may be rare in facilities with robust infection prevention and control programs ().
White deep dish: Pizza a little more indulgent with the addition of béchamel sauce
That annual New Year’s resolution to drop 10 pounds always gets tough in Chicago when the cold, cloudy days of February hit. With National Pizza Day on Sunday, La Barra (Riverside and Oak Brook) and Labriola (Chicago) are making that narrower waist even more of a longshot with the introduction of their White Deep Dish Pizza. Some may think that a classic Chicago deep dish pizza with a slab of sausage and extra pepperoni is as decadent as it comes. They would be wrong.
