California treated worshippers like criminals — Supreme Court must draw the line
The government tracked churchgoers. It threatened a church with millions in fines. It pressured a bank to accelerate a church’s loan. It tried to shut down worship. Not in another country — in California. Why Trump’s Iran deal is still a win, despite setbacks Sneaky new gambling tax punishes you for losing. Reconciliation 3.0 must end it The Muslim Brotherhood’s British piggy bank For six years, a California church has been punished for a single act: worship.

Whatever happened to the EU’s Green Trade?
For those who believe in free trade – and in the principle that the EU should be a force for promoting free trade around the world – the last few years have been disappointing. The focus of the von der Leyen Commission on expanding the vast new ‘Green Deal’ has seen a return to protectionism. New barriers to trade and free enterprise have been erected in the name of defending the environment, and yet the cost has been borne mostly by the EU’s closest allies, and the Global South.
Ploughing the Furrow
Husband discovers cheating wife’s ‘souvenir’ “It was just sex,” she said. Was that a deliberate reference to my own excuse for cheating, just that once, and over two years ago? Was this payback? Had she been harbouring the resentment of my infidelity all this time, waiting for an opportunity to return the insult? She had got back around two in the morning. She’d been to her office party and I’d been horny all evening, to the point of distraction.
Why can't we see the far side of the moon?
Some people see a face in the moon; others see a rabbit or a toad. But regardless of what you see on the lunar surface, we all view the same side of our natural satellite. So why don't we ever see the far side of the moon? From Earth, it appears as if the moon doesn't rotate at all, but it does spin on its axis, just like Earth does. However, the moon is tidally locked to our planet. That means it takes just as long for the moon to rotate about its axis as it does to orbit Earth - roughly one month.
TYLER: America’s Persecuted Pastors Are Fighting For Freedom
America’s persecuted pastors are quickly becoming some of the most vocal advocates for faith and freedom in this country. With court cases from California to Maine, these pastors are making a stand to ensure that all Americans have the freedom to practice their faith without government interference. Though religious freedom is a fundamental right enshrined in the United States Constitution, it has come increasingly under attack. These pastors are fighting so that normal Americans do not have to.

A case against Winfield school bond questions
In the upcoming election USD 465 voters are being asked two questions regarding facilities. If both questions are approved an increase in property taxes of at least 10% will be required to make the annual payments of $3.5 million to $4 million for 25 years depending on the interest rate when the bonds are sold. The bond payments would be additional spending to the over $13 million increase in the 465 budget since the end of 20-21 school year.
Western liberals, please stop patronising Ukraine
Perhaps one of the greatest problems for the West that has emerged from the war between Ukraine and Russia is just how far opinions in Western Europe have diverged from those of allies in the East. The gulf between what is being said about the conflict in Eastern Europe, as opposed to the sentiments expressed in Western Europe, has widened drastically since the beginning of the conflict.
Western Europe needs to treat Central and Eastern European nations as equal partners, Brussels Report
By Robert Tyler, Senior Policy Advisor at EU affairs think tank New Direction Today, French President Emanuel Macron is in Moscow to meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in a bid to avert war in Ukraine. Whilst pundits and supporters in Western Europe have cheered for this, there has been little praise in the East. In Kyiv, Warsaw, Tbilisi and Tallinn, Macron’s visit is viewed as yet another naive Westerner falling for Moscow’s optics.
Envisioning the end time
A new collection by Bruno Maçães foresees China’s dominance over the West Bruno Maçães, former secretary of state for European affairs in Portugal, is someone who likes to reflect. Scroll through his Twitter feed, and you will find his takes on everything from crypto currency to China to complaints about conference fatigue.
Britain is becoming the new arsenal of democracy
For two weeks running, regular flights have been leaving RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, bound for Kyiv Boryspol Airport in Ukraine. On board each departing C-17 are the tools required to keep Ukraine free from Russian aggression. Crates of anti-tank rockets, body armour, and other defensive equipment are unloaded and quickly dispatched across the Ukrainian armed forces in preparation for the inevitable. Each flight however also carries something else for the Ukrainians, a renewed sense of hope.
Never mind Macron, worry about whoever comes next
The combination of Macron's new-found popularity on the right, the apathetic support for him from the centre, and Le Pen's tainted brand, may save him in next year's election Polls have been tightening in France ahead of next year’s Presidential elections. The expected second round showdown is between France’s current leader Emmanuel Macron, and the perennial far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.
Zoom and the equalisation of ideas
How politicians and videoconferencing have made the world smaller When it comes to neologisms that have entered common usage during the COVID-19 pandemic, none are quite so enjoyable to say as the verb ‘zoom’. Every time I see someone write in an email that they’ll ‘zoom’ me – I can’t help but imagine them saying it in the way that a toddler might whilst playing with a toy car.
Why is Putin Rewriting History?
Robert Tyler argues that President Putin’s recent essay reveals a sinister desire to force Ukraine - and other Baltic states - back into the Russian sphere. In a recent article, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Ukrainians and Russians were one people: a controversial claim given recent relations between the two countries.
Biden, Putin, and the Danger of Shaking Hands
At the Geneva Summit, the American President ignored warnings not to shake his Russian counterpart’s hand. In doing so, he reflected a wider trend in which the West shuts its eyes to Russian aggressions, blocking out decades of sound advice coming from Eastern and Central Europe. Over the course of the last year, people have been discouraged from shaking hands.
The West Needs a New Strategy for Belarus
Belarus has been carrying out oppressive measures against its people with abandon - and without any major repercussions from the West. A year has now passed since the highly contested elections in Belarus, which saw Lukashenko returned to power amidst allegations of corruption, voter suppression and intimidation. In the time since 9 August 2020, the regime has managed to carry out a campaign of terror against the opposition.
The EU cannot afford to play political games with Poland, Brussels Report
By Robert Tyler, Senior Policy Advisor at EU affairs think tank New Direction The recent escalation of the migrant crisis on the Polish border with Belarus is proving to be a major political headache for the European Union. On the one hand, the crisis, widely viewed as a hybrid threat from Russia and Belarus, is posing a major threat to the EU’s external borders, on the other hand, the European Commission is trying to remain firm in its stand-off with Poland over the Rule of Law Mechanism.
Until it sorts out its migration policy, the EU will be at the mercy of its authoritarian neighbours, Brussels Report
By Robert Tyler, Senior Policy Advisor at EU affairs think tank New Direction For a long time now, the EU has been struggling with the challenge of irregular migration. This includes refugees fleeing the civil war in Syria, attempting to reach the relative safety of Western Europe by crossing the border with Turkey, and onwards into Greece and the Balkans. As a result, the European Union, and Germany in particular, welcomed many of these people with open arms.
A closer look at Von der Leyen’s vaccine embarrassment, Brussels Report
By Robert Tyler, Senior Policy Advisor at EU affairs think tank New Direction Last week, a Belgian Court issued a ruling in the EU’s court case against pharmaceuticals giant AstraZeneca over its vaccine provision. The Court in Brussels, which was competent, due to the contract being governed by Belgian law, declared that “each of the parties is partially unsuccessful in their respective claims”, notably rejecting the European Union’s bid to speed up deliveries.
Isolating Morocco would be a historic blunder for the EU
Why the EU needs a change of policy approach to avoid Morocco becoming another uncooperative player in the region, which could be just as devastating as when the West lost Turkey Tensions have been running high between the European Union and Morocco in recent weeks. The breakdown in relations intensified on 17 May, when Moroccan border guards stepped down and allowed thousands of migrants to converge at the border of the Spanish exclave town of Ceuta.
The EU must renegotiate the EU-China investment deal, Brussels Report
By Robert Tyler, Senior Policy Advisor at EU affairs think tank New Direction After months of protests, on May 21st, the European Parliament voted to freeze the “EU China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment” (CAI). Whilst this was an encouraging first step, it’s only half the battle in terms of setting out a firmer line of action when dealing with China.
The EU’s go-it-alone foreign policy approach is failing, Brussels Report
By Robert Tyler, a political strategist, working for a European political party During the past couple of weeks, the European Union has made a number of important foreign policy moves.
Of course English should become an official language in Brussels
Friday, 09 April 2021 This is an opinion article by an external contributor. The views belong to the writer. In a recent interview with this newspaper liberal Minister for Multilingualism in Brussels, Sven Gatz, suggested that the city cannot ignore English. And how right he is. English is allegedly spoken by just over a third of Brussels residents – with many using it on a day to day basis.
Ban cycling and walking to help Brussels' taxis
Friday, 02 April 2021 This is an opinion article by an external contributor. The views belong to the writer. The recent decision to ban Uber from the streets of Brussels was very clearly a political move to support the taxi industry and the transport unions. As such, it makes sense to also introduce some extra measures to support the taxi industry further – namely by removing any extra unfair and undue competition from the streets.
Counterview: How should Europe position itself towards China?, Brussels Report
After the EU imposed sanctions on Chinese officials over the plight of the Uighurs in the Chinese province of Xinjiang, China has responded by imposing counter-sanctions, hitting not only European politicians but also the European Council’s Political and Security Committee, as well as European scholars. Hereunder, BrusselsReport.eu highlights two conflicting approaches the EU and EU member states could take towards China.
The EU-China investment agreement is a disaster for the West
The EU-China Comprehensive Investment Agreement that was announced in December 2020 at joint virtual press conference between Ursula von der Leyen, Charles Michel, Xi Jinping, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron is a disaster for the western world. It fails to address human rights violations in China. It doesn’t tackle the problem of forced labour (slavery). It legitimises an authoritarian regime. And most of all, it won’t create the jobs for Europeans that it promises.
Erasmus and Brexit
No policy decision better encapsulates the entire Brexit process better than the UK’s decision to withdraw from the Erasmus Programme. For those in Brussels, it was a baffling move that left many scratching their heads, whilst for those in Westminster it was the fulfilment of the promise of the referendum to ‘take back control’. However, for anyone who truly understood the reasons why the UK decided to leave the EU in the first place, the decision acts as the perfect anecdote for the whole thing.
Recognising those who give back with digital badges
In the last few months we’ve seen, more than ever, the transformative power of volunteering. Volunteers have shopped for food and medicine and kept community spirit alive and it’s been volunteers who will be assisting in delivering the forthcoming coronavirus vaccine. According to the UK Civil Society Almanac 2020 the voluntary sector contributed £18.2bn to the UK economy in 2017/18. The report recognises that 166,592 voluntary organisations in the UK employed 909,088 people in 2019.
