Robert Beatty is part of the first wave of Theravada Buddhist teachers who introduced Insight Meditation and Mindfulness to the West in the 1970s. His teaching style centers on meeting students exactly where they are in their journeys, offering a unique combination of Buddhist practices and Western psychotherapy. Over the years, He has worked with thousands of individuals, helping them integrate Buddhist teachings in a practical, relatable way. His method blends traditional meditation with elements such as humor, music, poetry, and movement, all while encouraging people to face life's challenges with openness and a compassionate heart.
Throughout his journey, Robert had the privilege of studying with various respected teachers and receiving guidance that has shaped his approach. He spent many years learning from a prominent teacher, gaining insight into the Burmese Buddhist tradition. 1982, he was authorized to teach within this lineage, marking a significant milestone in his path. He also delved into non-dual spirituality and was ordained as a novice monk in Burma. His training continued in India, where he studied under several influential figures in the Buddhist community.
After completing his BSc in Psychology and Chemistry from McGill University, Robert explored the world. He lived and worked in various countries, including Australia and Switzerland, for five years. His life took a pivotal turn in 1972 when he attended a Buddhist meditation retreat, which led him to ordain as a monk in India. However, due to health reasons, he was forced to return to Canada, which marked the beginning of his more profound commitment to blending Western psychotherapy with Buddhist practices.
Upon his return to Canada, Robert pursued a Master's degree in Environmental Studies, where his focus was on understanding how humans impact the environment and how individuals can live in greater harmony with nature and each other. During this time, he was also introduced to Western psychotherapy, which led him to merge it with meditation in his teachings.
In 1979, Robert relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he earned his Master of Social Work degree and worked in addiction treatment. He later shifted to working as a social worker in hospice care, helping individuals navigate the challenges of illness and death.
In 1980, Robert founded a meditation group that grew into the Portland Insight Meditation Community. Under his leadership, the community flourished, eventually acquiring a space that became a hub for meditation classes and retreats. After many years of teaching and community-building, he transitioned out of the organization in 2024 to focus on individual teaching and consultation.
Robert has authored Mindfulness for a Happy Life: New Teachings of an Old Tradition for Today's World. Over decades of experience, he has helped many individuals address emotional and psychological challenges. He has taught thousands of classes and led numerous residential retreats and conferences. His teachings are available through various formats, including podcasts and videos.
Today, Robert offers individual consultations and meditation teachings, supporting people in their emotional, psychological, and spiritual journeys. His website provides more information about his work.
