Hailing from the suburban community of Mahopac, New York City, Goetschkes was raised in a family where his father served as both a firefighter and a plumber. His father's inspirational role fueled his desire to become a hero, ultimately leading him to join the Coast Guard during the first Gulf War.
Goetschkes completed his secondary education at Mahopac High School in New York City in 1984. He further pursued his academic interests at SUNY Oneonta, immersing himself in history, economics, and foil fencing and ultimately graduating in 1988. Subsequently, he pursued a Master of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and a Field Endorsement in Secondary Social Sciences.
Throughout his educational journey, Goetschkes exhibited an indomitable spirit, working multiple part-time jobs year-round and assuming personal financial responsibility for his college tuition. This relentless determination carried over into his professional endeavors and even during his dedicated 11-year service in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he garnered entrance into the esteemed Alpha Sigma Lambda Honors Fraternity in 2002.
After completing his studies, Goetschkes embarked on an international expedition by joining the U.S. Peace Corps. For two and a half years, he resided in Tonga, engaging in community-based service that allowed him to forge profound connections, nurture relationships, and contribute to the global community. This enriching experience also allowed him to explore diverse cultures in India, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji, augmenting his worldwide perspective and profoundly influencing his pedagogical approach throughout his 25-year teaching career.
