Comparative analysis of chitin isolation techniques from mushrooms: toward sustainable production of high-purity biopolymer
Comparative analysis of chitin isolation techniques from mushrooms: toward sustainable production of high-purity biopolymer† Chitin, an abundant and versatile biopolymer, is widely used across industries such as biomedicine, agriculture, and materials science. Traditionally sourced from crustacean waste, its extraction poses environmental and allergenic challenges, driving the exploration of alternative sources.

About this collection Sustainability is the color of Cyan: from the terrestrial green to the marine blue, our planet’s finite resources must be not only preserved, but utilized in a sustainable way. We live on a blue planet with over two thirds of the surface covered in water. The oceans have the potential to provide resources, such as food, biopolymers to replace plastics, and minerals to replace mining, but this environment is also under threat from plastic, pollution, and CO2 levels.
Farmed Jumbo Shrimp Molts: An Ionic Liquid Strategy to Increase Chitin Yield per Animal while Controlling Molecular Weight
Farmed Jumbo Shrimp Molts: An Ionic Liquid Strategy to Increase Chitin Yield per Animal while Controlling Molecular Weight In pursuit of bioplastics which require a controlled biopolymer molecular weight, consistency, and supply, we have examined the chitin in the molts of farm raised Hybrid (H1) Pacific whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) by collecting the molts during the shrimp growth cycle, sorting by shrimp average body weight (ABW), and extracting the chitin from the molts using the...
Hypergolic Triggers as Cocrystal Formers: Cocrystallization for Creating New Hypergolic Materials with Tunable Energy Content
Communication Tomislav Friscic Corresponding Author E-mail address: tomislav.friscic@mcgill.ca McGill University, Chemistry, 801 Sherbrooke St. W., H3A 0B8 Montreal, CANADA Search for more papers by this author PDF PDF Share Abstract We demonstrate a cocrystal‐based strategy to create new solid hypergols, i.e. materials exhibiting spontaneous ignition in contact with an oxidant, from typically non‐hypergolic fuel molecules, in which the energy content and density of the material can be...

Exploring the role of ionic liquids to tune the polymorphic outcome of organic compounds
While molecular solvents are commonly used in the screening of polymorphs, the choices are often restricted. Ionic liquids (ILs) – also referred as designer solvents – have immense possibility in this regard because of their wide flexibility of tunability. More importantly, the interactions among the IL components are completely unique compared to those present in the molecular solvents.
Triple salting-out effect: a required phenomenon in the formation of ionic-liquid-based aqueous multiphase systems
Novel aqueous multiphase systems (MuPS) formed by quaternary mixtures composed of cholinium-based ionic liquids (ILs), polymers, inorganic salts and water are here reported. The influence of several ILs was studied, demonstrating that a triple salting-out is a required phenomenon to prepare MuPS. The respective phase diagrams and "tie-surfaces" were determined, followed by the evaluation of the effect of temperature.

Raisin’ in the Sun: Wine Grapes & Solar Power
Vigneron Gary Cox started Cox Canyon Vineyards and Ellensburg Canyon Winery in 1999 with a long-term goal of environmental sustainability, becoming the first sustainable vineyard and winery in Kittitas County. A vineyard, after all, can have a lifespan of 120 years. The oldest known vine in the world has been producing grapes in Slovenia for more than 400 years. In a move toward greater self-sufficiency, Cox recently invested in renewable energy.

Preparation and comparison of bulk and membrane hydrogels based on Kraft- and ionic-liquid-isolated lignins
Lignin obtained from two different sources, from the Kraft process (KF-lignin) and from dissolution of wood using ionic liquid (IL-lignin), was dissolved in alkaline solution and crosslinked with different methods, attempting to form bulk and membrane hydrogels. Without a chemical crosslinker, no physical lignin gels could be formed.
Eliminating The Need For Chemistry
Humanity has always relied on Nature for survival. We have used natural resources for food, shelter, heat, and transportation. In times of plenty, we have developed inventive products to improve the quality of life. For example, cotton and wool are used for clothing and minerals for tools and colorants. Chemists have also looked to Nature for inspiration. Many of our early discoveries were based on understanding and manipulating materials such as cellulose and rubber.
