In April 2023, the European Commission adopted a regulation banning the sale of new passenger cars emitting CO2 from 2035. In response, the French government encourages the acquisition of electric vehicles by offering purchase subsidies and keeping electricity taxes lower than the equivalent taxes on gasoline and diesel. It also grants their drivers privileges, such as access to zero-emission zones in city centers or reserved parking spaces. The magnitude of the transition to operate is impressive.
