Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

The first keyboard I used was on a manual typewriter, and now I own one myself... largely for ironic purposes.

How is social media changing news?

The conversation with readers about a story no longer starts after you publish that piece; it's now a continuum.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You're curious, you're in perpetual beta, and your first instinct when something's wrong is to reach for a keyboard (or touchscreen).

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

E-mail. (I don't have to answer immediately, but I can easily find the message later on. Note: Please use a distinctive subject header!)

Why did you become a journalist?

I like to learn and I like to write. Also, I'm not sure I have any other employable skills.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Wrote long, overly earnest pieces about... wait, this is everybody's answer to this, right?

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Not one story, but a handful of them: the columns I wrote on copyright overreach for the Post early in the 2000s.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Try to solve an editor's problem. As in: "Here's the piece I can deliver in a week that covers a topic your site is overdue to address."
