He accidentally tore off his awning. His RV insurance company gave him a brand-new RV for it!
By Rod Andrew A momentary distraction, followed by howls of rage, led to a long and sometimes frustrating process. My wife and I make a great towing tandem. Rule number one: I never move our truck and trailer unless she is there to guide me, and I trust her judgment. Most readers of RVtravel.com will understand the wisdom of this arrangement, but, sometimes, our best plans… In early April, we arrived back home to Canada, having driven back from a two-month holiday in Southern California.
Roadside stop near Death Valley is an unexpected delight. (This story is delightful, too)
By Rod Andrew Probably most readers of RVtravel.com have visited the amazing landmarks, natural and man-made, that are part of the RV experience. Standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon is, well, overwhelming. During our travels, my wife and I have had our share of these majestic moments, but, strangely, it has been unexpected moments of joy that we remember most vividly, and that have had the most lasting impact on us. I’d like to share one of those moments.
Finding a hidden artistic marvel in California's deep desert
By Rod Andrew There is a spectacular snake hiding in the hills near Borrego Springs, California. No, it’s not a rattler. I guess it could be called a rock snake. In 2020, Don and Lorraine, friends of my wife, Sharon, and mine, took us for a hike into the hills outside Borrego Springs to look for a snake. Here’s what they led us to. Nestled in a sandy hollow in the hills lay this approximately 20-meter-long serpent. That’s Sharon standing beside it for perspective.

Google Maps help solve desert mandala mystery years later
By Rod Andrew The Mandala Part one Ten years ago, my wife, Sharon, and I met four friends in the desert near an abandoned mine called American Girl in Southern California. I was intrigued by the name because of the doll that was a fad at that time. We were dry-camping with Don and Lorraine and Chris and Sherrie in a very flat and featureless stony desert, which, as we drove in, didn’t seem to be very interesting. The only break in the scenery was the gravel road that we arrived on.
A very, very wet Valentine's Day in Borrego Springs
By Rod Andrew After several years of wandering through the Western USA, my wife and I finally settled on a place we wanted to spend our Canadian winters. The township of Borrego Springs, California, offered everything we needed, including a slow lifestyle and marvelous weather. Tennis, pickleball, hiking, biking, a rich cultural life and a wonderful library in the middle of a stunning desert state park. It was perfect.

Feeling a little... grumpy... in the RV park showers
Last week Cheri Sicard collected your stories recalling the weirdest RVing encounter you’ve ever had. Frequent contributor Rod Andrew wrote in and sent us his own tale. It’s very weird all right… and a little grumpy… By Rod Andrew We’ve all probably had unsettling experiences in public bathrooms. You know, “Oops, sorry Ma’am. I guess I’m in the wrong room.” Nothing serious, but a bit embarrassing and soon forgotten. Well, I had one years ago that I still remember vividly.

Great expectations: Revisiting places that aren't as you remember them
By Rod Andrew My wife and I were fortunate to have two friends guide us on our first RV trip from British Columbia to Southern California. We were newcomers to pulling our trailer, a 19-foot unit that we had bought secondhand, just to try out RVing. It was our trainer trailer. We were trainee trailer pullers. We wandered through the Western states, as our friends introduced us to their favorite parks. Of all the places we visited, Joshua Tree National Park had the greatest impact.

Finding community in campgrounds, like going back to the 1950s
By Rod Andrew About 12 years ago my wife and I made our first trek south, towing a trailer from British Columbia to Southern California. Early in the trip, we learned something that you readers probably already know, but which came as a surprise to us. We found community. I had thought that travelling would be all about where we went and what we saw and did, but found that this would really only be a small part of what lay ahead.
RVer shares story of RV park bathhouse; crappy situation unfolds
Rod Andrew sent us this story and it made us smile. His accompanying email said, “I’m sitting in front of a fire in a small cabin on a frozen lake in B.C. Even with the curtailment of our activities imposed on us by Covid, life can still be good.” You’re right, Rod. Thanks for sharing your story about your bathhouse experience.
