Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing record and movie reviews straight out of school.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Grew up with one. Next question ...

How is social media changing news?

Social media is news. Embraces the regular person-in-the-street, making everyone a reporter.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

C'mon! Has to be Clark Kent.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means taking news and reporting the news seriously. A chance to impart accurate information and cut through the fluff and drivel.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email with phone follow up. Second bit is critical as stuff can go unnoticed in the InBox. Stories and famils please. Not press releases.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook for immediacy, visibility and interactivity.

Who do you wish followed you?

Sir David Attenborough or Michael Palin

Why did you become a journalist?

I love learning and telling stories. Journalism taught me to do this responsibly and professionally. I like to blog too, but as a journalist.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, wrote and photographed satirical features.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Highlighting vanishing or endangered cultures is very satisfying and meeting the beautiful, but aging amasan of Japan was a moment.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Get it right. Learn to spell and fact-check. Then fact check again. Be your own critic and be hard on yourself.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time, but best before lunch!
