The Heart of Town
The sun beat down on us as we left Cedar Point—the famous amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. My daughter and son had joined me for a day of scaring ourselves on world-class roller coasters. As we pulled back into my father-in-law’s house, my son said, “See you at the game in a couple hours.” “You bet,” I replied. I grabbed some dinner and caught up with the rest of the family.

Well, Hello Invisible Wind Lip — McCall Life
It’s been a March to remember—and the forecast promises to keep delivering the goods for the next two weeks. Mr. Rodney took advantage of the small window between storms to ski Sargents and found tons of untracked pow and a few invisible wind lips that threw him head over heels. Enjoy this week’s video. See you out there!

Dawn Patrol - McCall Life
By Mr. Rodney The first week of the year disappeared in a blur—and with it, my ski legs. Every time I thought I could sneak out of the office for a quick run or two, the phone would ring, or an email would ping and I’d get sucked into another project. It was fun and rewarding. I like my job. But I wasn’t adding many ski days to my calendar and January was moving quickly.
And … We’re Off - McCall Life
My kids oohed, aahed and good-naturedly complained that our hot tub view of New Year’s Eve fireworks was partially blocked by our hotel. They tried jumping in the heated pool to see if the view was better. Nope. Still partially blocked. I smiled at their shenanigans and leaned back into the hot tub seat feeling content with how 2022 worked out and wondering at what 2023 had in store.
Magic Chairlifts — Camp Business
As the chair carried us through the trees, we swung our snowboards and chatted—one of those millions of little conversations you have with your kids. The words coming easily as the chair wraps you in a blanket of camaraderie and love. About halfway up, we noticed the shadows our boards were making on the snow below. We started wiggling around on the chair to make interesting shapes on the snow—laughing at the effects we were creating.
The 2022 Town Edit — McCall Life
What do you get when you ask McCall skiers and riders to submit their footage from last winter? One awesome film—enjoy! Click here to watch it on youtube BY RODNEY AUTH My email pinged, drawing my attention away from yet another spreadsheet. When I clicked on the message, I was happy for the ping. Inside was the latest submission from one of you. I immediately followed the link to watch the video and found a little slice of pure joy.
Factotum-Trailer - McCall Life
A Film by Lucas Gibbons Media By Rodney J. Auth I leaned back in my father-in-law’s patio chair, popped open a cold Dortmunder Gold and let the Ohio sunshine warm my face. I was visiting in-laws for the Fourth of July holiday and had just hired Lucas Gibbons to produce our first-ever McCall Life town edit. As I sipped and rocked, my mind wandered around, not thinking of anything in particular, just enjoying the peace that comes with having a clean to-do list. Twenty minutes later, my phone pinged.
The 2022 Town Edit Trailer — McCall Life
By Rodney Auth My email pinged, drawing my attention away from yet another spreadsheet. When I clicked on the message, I was happy for the ping. Inside was the latest submission from one of you. I immediately followed the link to watch the video and found a little slice of pure joy. The clip, like so many before it, featured a young skier having the time of her life—hucking off cliffs, sliding through powder, and hooting and hollering all the way down the mountain.
Backcountry Dad: Dude On Rock — McCall Life
“Rock on, Dude.” The lingo didn’t come naturally to me, but according to Hallie, my 21-year-old daughter, “On belay” followed by “Belay on” and then “Climbing” and “Climb on” was so yesterday. She taught me to say, “Dude on Rock,” and “Rock on Dude.” I laughed, looked at the rock and decided it was now or never.
U.S. Center for SafeSport — Camp Business
As you know, camps and recreation programs spark memories for children that last a lifetime and provide a reliable space where parents can expect their child to feel safe and supported. The trust parents seek to have in their child’s summer activity is important to reinforce—whether your organization offers a traditional camp experience, or an emerging enrichment activity such as coding or cosplay.

Spinning ‘Round Huckleberry Loop — McCall Life
There’s no more joy in life than chasing around a 70-year-old on a full suspension e-bike. For this Friday’s adventure, I hooked up with my good friend and fellow ski patroller, Doug Schroeder, to take a lap on Huckleberry Loop. We managed to break our microphones, crash our drone and have a blast. Happy Friday!
Backcountry Fridays - June Turns — McCall Life
Turning 50 hit me like a ton of bricks. To mitigate the impact, I decided to finally ski all twelve months of the year. The first five months were easy - lots of snow here in McCall - which meant I could hit Brundage or Tamarack and tick off the month. June turned out to be harder than expected - and it was all I could do to find a patch of snow to link three turns - my arbitrary minimum requirement for ticking off a month.
Backcountry Dads: Payette Rim Trail
By Rodney J. Auth The original plan was to ride the new Payette Lake Trail, but as sometimes happens with older guys, our signals got crossed. Greg pulled into the driveway in his truck followed closely by his wife in the family car. Instead of shuttling the lake trail, we were going to do the Rim Trail—the easy(ier) way. For those who are new to the Rim Trail, it’s perhaps the finest single track in the McCall area—which is really saying something.
Battling Age - parksandrecbusiness
I turned 45 last month and realized (five years too late) my body was different. When I raced my 9-year-old twins across the front yard, they won. Huh? When my daughter dared me to do a pull-up, I did two. Two! When I read something, I suddenly found it more comfortable to hold it out in front of me, like way in front of me. Even my hearing seemed to be acting up—I was told I was yelling during normal conversation. Say what? I decided something had to be done. So, I analyzed the problem.
The Importance of Being YOU!
I was on the road with my oldest daughter—chasing the elusive soccer scholarship—when my phone rang. On the other end, my second-oldest daughter was in tears. She had just returned from an invite-only lacrosse tryout for a regional team and didn’t make the cut. I listened for a few minutes then, when it was my turn to speak, told my daughter how proud I was of her.
Stand UP - parksandrecbusiness
The stand-up paddleboard boxes arrived at our office—approximately 12 feet long and three feet wide—and I realized I had a problem. The worldwide headquarters of Northstar Publishing doesn’t have a traditional loading dock—as in no loading dock. Trucks delivering large items pull up on the shoulder of U.S. Route 42, throw on their hazards and knock on our door. As I looked into the back of the truck, the driver smiled.
Shoulder Season - parksandrecbusiness
The twins snuck into my bedroom and shook my shoulder. I woke with a start and asked them what was wrong. “We really want to play in our soccer game on Saturday. Can we go skiing after the game?” I looked at them trying to figure out if I was being played. We always head out on Friday night for our ski weekends. Now, we’re going mid-day on Saturday? “We already did,” they said. “She said it’s OK with her if it’s OK with you.” “OK. We can do that.
One Call Away - parksandrecbusiness
I piled the 8-year-olds into our trusty Honda Pilot for the 7:30 a.m. run to their Saturday futsal (soccer) game and backed out of the drive. I took a sip of coffee—hoping it would magically turn the cold and gray January weather to 70 and sunny. I glanced in the rearview mirror. The always irrepressible twins were chatting happily about the lives of their stuffed animals—and everything that had already happened to them this morning. I smiled. That felt better. Absent-mindedly, I turned on the radio.
