Rugby star Jamie Jones-Buchanan MBE shares his journey to faith at Hetton Chapel
Just over a year ago, 'Gospel in the Dales' was set up as a trust to purchase a disused Methodist Chapel in the lovely village of Hetton in Upper Wharfedale, North Yorkshire. Beautiful as the Yorkshire Dales are, the locality is almost bereft of evangelical witness. People in the village were delighted that the historic chapel was preserved as a place of worship and not turned into holiday flats.
O holy night
Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Luciano Pavarotti, and Christmas carol services all have something in common. They have all sent a tingle down the spine singing 'O holy night'. It's a great tune with great words, but what was so 'holy' about that first, unforgettable Christmas night? It was holy because it was the night that heaven came to earth. The God who made all things entered our world as a tiny baby. The world did not begin with a Big Bang.
Lecturing, teaching, or preaching?
I wonder how many sermons you have heard in your lifetime. I reckon I have heard at least 15,000. And just a few have left such an impression that years later I can tell you what was said, who preached them and where I was. Each of those were characterised by an earnestness and an expression of the heart of the preacher. They fed my soul, impacted my will, and exalted the Lord Jesus. They were not what I call ‘Tyndale Commentary sermons’.
Who is this man whose birth we celebrate?
Never in history has the birth of a baby made such an impact. Over 2,000 years since he was laid in a manger in Bethlehem, the world still stops and celebrates the moment. What is so different about Jesus? Why do millions of people trust and serve him? What makes his followers give their time and money, even their lives, to reach out in compassion and care to people across the world whose needs are greater than their own?
The first Good Friday
The following is an edited extract from the author’s new evangelistic Easter book, Three Days that Changed the World, by 10Publishing. Dian Fossey was an unusual woman. She was an American-born zoologist who left the comforts of home to move to Africa. There she lived among the rare, gentle mountain gorillas of Rwanda, who were threatened with extinction due to the cruelty of poachers who were tracking them down one by one and slaughtering them.
Keswick Ministries and Faith in Later Life jointly host a training event focusing on older believers
As churches we naturally want to see young believers equipped to share their faith. But we often have large groups of older people in attendance, and how much care do we really give to ministering with them? Keswick Ministries, in partnership with Faith in Later Life, held a training event in May which focused on ministry with older people. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022
A R T I C L E By Roger Carswell This year we celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Reigning for 70 years, she is Britain’s longest-serving monarch. Born on 21 April 1926 in London, Elizabeth was the first child of the late Duke and Duchess of York. Since she was third in line to the throne, it was not expected that her father (George VI) would become King or that she would become Queen. Princess Elizabeth married Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, in Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947.
