Losing arms and getting little green snakes in my eyes
I was driving my '73 Chevy one day this summer on my way to Point Pleasant. I had my hand out the window propped on the side-view mirror. As a semi-truck passed in the opposite direction stirring up a rush of wind, it recalled to mind a certain lesson ingrained in me by my Grandmother from years ago.
Welcome 'Little Jack' and Baby Jesus
By Ron Branch Our sixth son, Jamin, and daughter-in-law, Morgan, were happy to learn that their third child conceived after two girls were born was a boy. I was, too. My vision for the boy developed soon after I learned the news, for I particularly envisioned that the boy would grow to be a good high school football player like his daddy. But my expectation was soon altered by a hard life reality check.
Design your home life to be like days of Heaven on earth
It should be, and there is no reason why it cannot be. For some, life at home is often compared to a "living hell." One man said that his home-life is a 50/50 proposition. He tells his wife what to do, and she tells him where to go.
The actions of actual Thanksgiving
By Ron Branch Thanksgiving is more than having a meal; more than being with family; more than watching a football game. Rather, actual thanksgiving is a personally proactive uplifting of God. When King David was finally able to bring to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and put it in the structure he had prepared for it, he was thankful that the Lord had finally permitted the realization of the event.
Right about what?
God (the God of Israel, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ) created the earth. He created mankind. He established His pre-eminent truths and principles consistent for our existence and for our good. Yet, despite the evident correctness of God's truths and principles, people throughout the ages have argued with God over what is right and wrong, and what is to be believed. During these post-modern times, attempts have intensified to deny and countermand God's revealed, absolute truths.
Adjusting from our expectations to God's will
Our sons and daughters-in-law have gifted Terry and I with 13 grandchildren. Our youngest son, Jamin, and daughter-in-law, Morgan, are presently expecting a third child, which is a little boy coming after two daughters. The expected child is referred to as "Little Jack." He is 25 weeks in the womb. "Jack" is Jamin's nickname. Recently, however, Morgan's doctor diagnosed a potential problem with Little Jack. The doctor then arranged appointments with doctors at the children's hospital in Philadelphia.
For the third time, watch out!
Over the years, I have cautioned you to be careful when you drive past our house. We are located at 2440 Adamsville Road, on the hill across from the Riverside Golf Course, about halfway between the Hartford and Mason community lines, Route 62 South. The reason for taking care is because you never know what may come rolling down the hill from our house into the road. There have been several basketballs to cause traffic to swerve. Two tires stopped cars each time.

One thing I like about snow is being able to throw a few snowballs. To me it is still fun to blast someone with a big ol’ fluffy snowball when they are not expecting it. With the recent snowfall and continued cold in our area, we have had several days consecutive of being able to round up a ball and letting it fly at whomever or whatever.

It takes no small amount of intestinal fortitude to face the year ahead with positive expectations without giving in to perpetual discouragement and sometimes despair. Life is rigorous. Disappointments abound. But, when internalized correctly, the Word of God provides sustaining and undergirding encouragement. Psalms 23 is probably the best known and favorite of all Scriptural passages. A divine sense of great comfort typifies the Psalm, which pictures Jesus Christ as the Great Shepherd of the sheep.

It was December 24, 1960 when my Dad and I started on the trip from Charles Town, W.Va. to Charleston, W.Va. The purpose was to make a Christmas visit with Dad’s parents, whom he had not seen for a long time. I was eight years-old at the time. They had never seen me. As we traveled, Dad had been pretty good about identifying the different roads we had to take. At the time we had just turned onto Route 39 at Mill Point, and was starting to ascend the Cranberry Glades Mountain.

After all these years, the Biblical Christmas account still brings joy and inspiration to me. But, one part of it in particular has developed as my favorite. It has to do with the Virgin Birth of the Lord. It involves a young unmarried woman by the name of Mary who was called upon by God to conceive and give birth to the Lord Jesus Christ. It was an act of absolute genius what God planned with the Virgin Birth concept. Perhaps the dynamics of it was no big deal with God.

A child can certainly interpret the experiences of life with funny perspectives at times. Your children and grandchildren do quite often, and you and I both are quick to share with others those funny and cutesy conclusions they make. Recently, after their Thanksgiving Day visit, Jeshua and his family set out on their return trip to home in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Our son, Keithen, and daughter-in-law, Jessica, have perhaps gone overboard with a new-found passion. They have become big-time fans of inflatable Christmas decorations. Last Christmas season, they started off with two inflatables for their yard. This year, they have approximately 40 blow-ups stationed in their yard. Their oldest daughter, Kinsley, is embarrassed by it all. She said that all of the high school kids that ride her school bus have been taking pictures when the bus stops to pick her up.

If you have grandchildren that live close enough to be seen on a regular basis, count yourself fortunate. Terry and I have seven grandchildren to this point, but each of them live hundreds of miles away from here. The youngest of them was born in September in Paducah, Kentucky, but I have not yet been able to see her and hold her because the distance – along with my schedule – have prohibited it.

Last week I wrote the article “You Cannot Beat It With a Stick” which cited Gary Fields of New Haven, W.Va, for the Sassafras walking sticks he has crafted in recent months. Our fourth son, Jeshua, read the article, and he sent me an email about how “the stick” with which Gary gifted our family inspired him to compose a poem. It is titled “Ode to My Mom,” and goes as follows: I’m glad my mom didn’t have that stick, When her son would need a lick Cuz she sure whooped on me.

In my estimation, Gary Fields of New Haven, W.Va., is a remarkable individual. He had an extraordinary association with Wahama High School for eons as a student and teacher. He was voted into the Wahama High School Hall of Fame. He continues to serve the community at large in a variety of noteworthy ways, and he is a faithful servant of God in Faith Baptist Church, Mason, W.Va. He is also full of ideas that inspire people around him.

This retro-article is applicable to October “Pastor Appreciation Month.” I could just see the top of his head from my sanctuary pew. He was sitting in the pulpit chair. I had no idea what his role was in the funeral. Someone sang a hymn, then, another spoke briefly about the deceased and cited Scripture from God’s Word. There was more singing. But, at the appointed time, the gentleman in the chair rose, and moved toward the pulpit. He was elderly in years, slightly bent, and deliberate in his steps.

A touching story is told involving the end of World War II. The allied armies gathered up a group of orphans and placed them under the care of a Christian organization. The workers assured the children that they were safe, and that they would be well fed. Most of the orphans had not known what it was like not to be afraid and not to be hungry.

As the Lord Jesus Christ passed through a Samaritan village, ten individuals corporately called to Him for help. These ten men were grievously ill with the most dreaded disease of that day. They were lepers, which meant that they were in the throes of a slow, agonizing death. Lepers were required to keep a distance from people because of their contagion, so they tried to get His attention from several feet away. Their voices sounded forth the hope that vibrated in their bodies, “Jesus? Master?

Like many of you, we like to feed the birds. We hang a long tube with sunflower seed, another is filled with seed for finches, and we hang a cage of suet. These feeders are located about 10 yards from our back door, and they attract the usual varieties of seed eating birds. The most fun bird for me to watch is the Nuthatch because it seems to do most of what it does upside down. To me, it makes a sound like some sort of clown tooting a ratchety little horn. The Nuthatch makes me laugh.
