Local Heat Applications as a Treatment of Physical and Functional Parameters in Acute and Chronic Musculoskeletal Disorders or Pain
Highlights • Local heat applications can have a positive effect on pain, physical function, disability, range of motion, quality of life, muscular strength, and tissue stiffness. • The positive effects of local heat applications can be observed predominantly in acute conditions. • Long-term effects and effects in chronic conditions are questionable and need further investigations.
Tendon morphological changes after a prolonged ski race can be detected by ultrasound echo intensity
Abstract Background Ultrasound imaging techniques have been used to assess the characteristics of skeletal muscles and tendons. Such techniques (gray scale analysis) allow qualitative evaluation and have been used recently to assess the internal structure of muscles and tendons by computer-aided gray scale analysis. We hypothesized that changes in the internal structure of the Achilles and patellar tendons after a ski mountaineering race competition could be detected with ultrasound.

A novel application of strain sonoelastography can detect changes in Achilles tendon elasticity during isometric contractions of increasing intensity
Journal of Foot and Ankle Research201912:30 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13047-019-0342-1 © The Author(s). 2019 Received: 7 November 2018 Accepted: 10 May 2019 Published: 21 May 2019 Abstract Background Mechanical and morphological properties of the Achilles tendon are altered in disease and in response to changes in mechanical loading. In the last few years different ultrasound based technologies have been used to detect tendon mechanical properties changes mainly in resting condition.
Cold-water or partial-body cryotherapy? Comparison of physiological responses and recovery following muscle damage
|
The aim of this study was to compare i) the physiological responses following cold-water immersion (CWI) and partial-body cryotherapy (PBC) and ii) the effects on recovery following a muscle-damaging protocol (5 x 20 drop jumps). Nineteen healthy males were randomly allocated into either a CWI (10 °C for 10 min; n = 9) or a PBC (-60 °C for 30 sec, -135 °C for 2 min; n = 10) group.
