Can Someone Tell me Why Chico and the Man is MIA?
Chico is in my top 5 most wanted shows (on disc; no streaming, thanks) that so far don’t have at least one season released on disc. I have the 6-episode sampler disc that Warner released many years ago, but unfortunately that didn’t lead to anything else. I was young but I do remember it in syndication at least briefly in (I think) the very early 80s and then not seeing it again until many years later when TV Land aired it for awhile. Fortunately I was able to record the episodes from TV Land.
Moe’s Alley taps into Santa Cruz’s love for country music at Western Wednesdays
Sure you can make an airtight case that California’s quintessential native sound is The Beach Boys … or The Grateful Dead, or Los Lobos, or Tupac Shakur, or Dave Brubeck, or Green Day. There are almost no wrong answers here. But for a huge percentage of music lovers up and down the Golden State, the sound of California is a fiddle, a pedal-steel, a shop-worn Gibson, and somebody singing about heartache to the glow of a neon beer sign.

The injured pelican sat immobile on a piece of pipe at the Santa Cruz Harbor, near Seabright State Beach. Its foot was bloody and it was tethered to rocks 20 feet away by a long piece of fishing line. Miraculously, it had managed to swim to the rampart pipe and had stationed itself there, staring out at the water.
The Santa Cruz music scene is great, but the volume might be giving you hearing loss

I’ve just come from an evening of music and dancing at one of Santa Cruz County’s more notable venues. It was a great night; the band rocked loud and long, while legions of the faithful danced the night away.
Even frozen Antarctica is being walloped by climate extremes, scientists find
One western glacier is melting so fast that scientists have nicknamed it the Doomsday Glacier and there’s an international effort trying to figure out what’s happening to it. Aug. 8, 2023, 9:04 AM EDT / Source: The Associated Press By The Associated Press Even in Antarctica — one of the most remote and desolate places on Earth — scientists say they are finding shattered temperature records and an increase in the size and number of wacky weather events.
Ever-larger cars and trucks are causing a safety crisis on US streets
Response to Diamond_Dog (Original post) Wed Aug 2, 2023, 10:00 AM 1. My gripes besides traffic. Parking. They leave little room for on-the-street parking. Intersections: They park where you have to inch out into intersections because you can't see traffic in either direction. Otherwise, you risk being T-boned. Forests Are Losing Their Ability to Hold Carbon
Thu Jul 27, 2023, 09:15 AM E&E News through Scientific American A new USDA report finds forests could become a major emitter of carbon by 2070 By Minho Kim, E&E News on July 26, 2023 CLIMATEWIRE | U.S. forests could worsen global warming instead of easing it because they are being destroyed by natural disasters and are losing their ability to absorb planet-warming gases as they get older, a new Agriculture Department report says.
"On this July 4, we would do well to renounce nationalism and all its symbols: ........
....... its flags, its pledges of allegiance, its anthems, its insistence in song that God must single out America to be blessed. Is not nationalism—that devotion to a flag, an anthem, a boundary so fierce it engenders mass murder—one of the great evils of our time, along with racism, along with religious hatred? These ways of thinking—cultivated, nurtured, indoctrinated from childhood on— have been useful to those in power, and deadly for those out of power.
The Land Conservation and Development Commission
Oregon is one of the few states to have taken seriously the protection of its natural beauty. After Earth Day in 1970, both Republicans and Democrats in Salem established a commission to coordinate goals and objectives across the state as cities, counties and agencies sought to balance economic growth with environmental health. The Land Conservation and Development Commission was created 50 years ago this month when Gov. Tom McCall signed Senate Bill 100 into law.
The Intel® Fortran Compiler in Intel® oneAPI
by Ron Green I often hear members of the Fortran community make statements such as “I thought Intel® oneAPI (oneAPI) is all about C++ and SYCL”? and “Why is Fortran even in oneAPI since it has nothing to do with C++ or GPUs“? Isn’t Intel® oneAPI all about GPUs”? Or “I don’t use GPUs so why should I move away from my Fortran compiler in Intel® Parallel Studio XE?” Let’s explore these valid questions and concerns. Is Fortran part of Intel® oneAPI? “Isn’t Intel® oneAPI all about C++ and SYCL”?
McIlroy faces the music
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA | Two scenes, two principals, one answer. On Tuesday night at The Puttery – an upscale, golf-themed night spot in this city’s vibrant South End district – Rory McIlroy made his first public comments since missing the cut at the Masters then skipping the RBC Heritage the week after, triggering a $3 million penalty for bypassing a second designated event, a program he helped create.
WI: Madison mayoral candidates spar over bus rapid transit once again

Never understood how someone who displayed such a cynical but clear understanding of the downside of human nature in his strips -- and why it was the downside -- could be far worse personally. All our papers now, the LA Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution, and WaPo, have dropped his strip. I often found his take on humanity and the workplace very funny, so I'll miss it.
Dr. Oz Says Uninsured Have No 'Right to Health'
Response to 2naSalit (Reply #25) Wed Sep 7, 2022, 06:26 PM 30. The availability of affordable health insurance (or lack thereof) is triggering for me. We’re a self employed family and thus are self insured. I pay $1955 a month for mediocre insurance for the three of us in this household. That’s just for my little family. I pay health insurance premiums for my employees who aren’t covered by a spouse or a parent’s plan.
We are at a place we have never been before.
Mon Aug 29, 2022, 08:21 PM kentuck (107,052 posts) We are at a place we have never been before. People are looking for a precedent. There is not one. We are left with our own instincts and our inward compass. It is similar to a war zone. We have to improvise daily in order to make progress. We cannot afford to go into a deep sleep or let our guard down. We are fighting for our democracy. The enemy is determined and delusional. We must defeat their delusions.

Lawmakers passed the 30-day stopgap measure on a bipartisan basis with a vote of 365-51. The short-term extension now heads to the Senate, which is expected to clear it as soon as Saturday and send it to President Biden's desk.

Ron Green Jr.: A Look Back at Charlotte's Sports History
ON A WARM SUNDAY in mid-June 1969, Arnold Palmer stood in the 18th fairway in the final round of the Kemper Open at Quail Hollow Country Club surrounded by what felt like every beating sports heart in Charlotte. I was a starstruck 12-year-old, caught up in the tingle of the moment, Palmer having charged into contention at the very end, his gallery swelling through the early afternoon until it ringed the 18th hole, seven or eight deep in places.
We didn't have the "green thing" back in our day....(a most enjoyable read!)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2402937 What was old is new again... My parents generation (pre-baby boom) recycled everything because there wasn't this level of gross consumerism that was foisted upon the American public until the post WWII years. The babyboomers exploited the worlds resources on a much grander scale that could have never been imagined before.

Ron Green bids farewell to the Masters
I’m prowling around the attic of my mind, dust-covered memories here, yesterday’s memories there. I’m looking for a way to say goodbye. After 60 years of covering the Augusta Masters golf tournament, I have chosen to stay at home this year. Why? My best golfing buddy explains it as follows: “He’s nuts.” No, I’m not, not totally. I’m satisfied with what I did in those 60 years in Augusta. I’m more than satisfied. I’m proud of it, OK? I want to leave it alone. It doesn’t need any more chapters.
Ron Green Sr.: Remembering Dean Smith’s first game, and a lifetime of excellence
It was Dec. 2, 1961. North Carolina’s Tar Heels had just won their home opener, defeating Virginia 80-46. The Tar Heels’ new head coach, Dean Smith, met with his team in the locker room, then came out, looked around at a handful of us who had come looking for a quote or two for our stories and asked Bob Quincy, the sports information director, “What do I do now?” He figured it out.
